May 2002 Contest

If you could take a classic manga, comic book or novel and have it reworked to a modern day big budget anime movie, what would you pick to be done? Send it to us at metropolis@animeondvd.com. Be sure to send your address as well so if you win, we can send off the prize as soon as possible. We'll draw six random winners at the end of the contest.

And the prize? We've got six copies of Metropolis courtesy of Columbia Tri-Star, so that means we'll get six people to win!

Entries will be accepted from 05/01/2002 through 05/31/2002 @ 8 pm EST

And the winners are:
  1. Lee Jackson
Without a doubt, it'd have to be Stephen R. Donaldson's "The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant" double trilogy. It came out long enough ago (70s) to be a classic, and Lord Foul, the Giants, Mhoram, and The Land could only be properly presented by way of anime.
  2. Bob Strootman
    Easy- Call of Cthulhu!
  3. Nathan Williams
I'd love to see Frank Herbert's Dune universe animated. In a 26-episode format, and without all the sci-fi budgetary constraints of live-action, maybe anime could capture the depth and intrigue that past attempts have only scratched the surface of.
  4. Jennifer Root
If I could have a novel made into a anime I would pick the novel called Memoirs of a Geisha. I think it would be a really neat idea for a anime. Plus the novel is set in Japan and is all about the Japanese culture so it would be easy to make an anime out of it!
  5. Mike Klockow
If I had to choose a classic book/manga/comic to make into a big-budget anime thriller, it'd have to be Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. It has your classic anime theme of an incredably talented youth being pushed by adults to some unknown end. It also has unknown enemies known only by their bug-like appearance, a slew of simulated battles against elder space academy students, a fantasy game Ender gets drawn into to test the limits of his character, a realistic space battle simuation that would be the perfect place to insert big, unique detailed explosions (planet go boom!), and an ending with a surprise twist... I would love to see this on the big screen, and as I was reading it I thought that it could make a great animation.
  6. Jay Dee Archer
What would I want to see as a big budget anime movie? Well, this is an American novel, but I'd love to see a Pern novel animated. A good choice would probably Moreta, Dragonlady of Pern. It works well on its own, while the original trilogy would just be much too long for a movie.
