Be sure to check out with Edwin in the Anime DVD Support Campaign section. We've got our first chat coming up at the end of this weekend, so it should be fun! I've enjoyed chatting with people in the forum, and look forward to some real-time chats. If anyone from the anime houses are interested in getting involved some time, be sure to let Edwin know and we'll get things properly arranged.

Is Pioneer Anime now a force for the dark side? According to people who were at the recent Anime Expo where they announced their ending of support for laserdisc, some have said that Pioneer is intending to do only movies and short OVA's on DVD from here on out. No TV series. If true, then this definitely puts Pioneer on the bottom of my "to buy list"....

I still haven't gotten to watching Iria yet. I went and upgraded my poor old P133 yesterday and went full into a nice P350 with DVD Rom on it - all so I can review all of the upcoming Bubblegum Crisis DVD Suite! See what I do for you guys? :)

There's also a few street date changes, though the only "major" title adversely affected is Record of Lodoss War.

An alternate angle has been put up for Night Warriors: Darkstalkers Vol. 1 disc.

My review for Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer is now up.

Just a touch of maintenance tonight. A few new "cover" graphics, a couple of new polls to be found, little tweaks in the code here and there.

Wanted: Columnists. :) Anyone interested is more than welcome to submit ideas or full columns related to anime and DVD to the mail address at the left. At the moment, I'm quite interested in hearing something from the large female readers here on their thoughts of the two formats.

Totally unconfirmed rumors say that spring '99 will see the release of the Tenchi Muyo OVA collections. Umm, what are they gonna do between now and then? The Pioneer plate is almost empty right now, consisting of only two Viz releases.

NEWS: 08/27/98
My review for Roujin-Z is now up.

According to Laserviews, Bubblegum Crisis is now officially announced with a street date of 9/22. I'm waiting for a response from Multimedia 2000 as to whether they will be selling it earlier directly or whether it will be available from the online retailers at the same time. The plus to waiting for a retailer is that you'll get a better discount on it.

My email from Pioneer regarding Fushigi Yuugi indicates that there is nothing known about a DVD release yet. Of course, it could just be that the reps don't know anything yet. Pioneer? I'd love to get on one of your press release lists. :)

My review for Area 88: Blue Skies of Betrayal is now up. Check 'er out!

Just to clear up a quick question I've gotten a few of today regarding the cases used by the CPM anime. There are two flavors of CPM releases. One is the releases by CPM themselves, like Area 88, Gall Force and Harmageddon. CPM chooses to use keepcases and the "ANIME DVD" branding logo on the front. The second flavor is releases by Image Entertainment. Image uses the snapper cases (most likely a deal with Warner, as Warner has an agreement with them regarding pressing schedules) without the "ANIME DVD" logo. Both types ARE CPM releases, just under different labels and different cases. I'm just glad we're seeing anime. :)

First off, I'd like to welcome the Anime DVD Support Campaign to the site. After talking with Edwin from there, I offered him to move onto this site so he can expand things and we can offer a more defined focus both for fans and for companies out there to get information FROM the fans about how we'd like to see our anime on DVD. It should take about a week to a week and a half to get him and his code all set up. This will also allow us to bring you more regular columns and information from people besides myself.

Word from a reliable source is that Pioneer has indeed dropped the ick-box and are sticking with keepcases. Any chance on being able to upgrade older boxes guys? I'd drop a few bucks in the mail to get a keepcase for Tenchi, Ranma and DBZ....

Also from the same source is that ADV is intending to have Battle Angel Alita and Tekken 3 as their first DVD offerings. Alita is definitely high on my list of wants, and will be the THIRD time I've bought this show from them. Tekken 3 may also have the dubious honor of being the only subtitled release of this show.

I got in my lovely package of DVD's today that contained Iria (expect a short delay on the storyline, but I'll say right here and now, THIS DISC ROCKS!) due to the length, as well as Roujin Z. Animenation is taking its sweet time in sending me the Area 88 and Beautiful Dreamer discs though. Hmph.

A new guest review is up for Macross: Do You Remember Love. This ranks right up there with Wings of Honeamise as a top fave movie of all time, Hollywood included. Bandai? Time to get DVD'ing my friends.

I may expound on this further in a column or editorial, but I want to give the studios some advice. Releases like Iria are most welcomed for catalog titles that have been out for some time, especially for those of us who are upgrading from other formats (or have gone the VHS-laser-dvd route). I certainly do NOT expect this for newer releases, but I would like to start seeing some more near day and date releases. I know it's early on, but as you can tell from the mainstream DVD market, day and date is critical. Keep bringing us the catalog material, especially ones that have not been on laserdisc before (though breaking Area 88 into three pieces is somewhat of a poor idea), but remember that it's new material that drives a market. The Night Warriors: Darkstalkers Revenge is a perfect example. I don't think I can rate that disc high enough.

Anyways, enough of that. ADV is on, Animeigo is gonna test the market soon, and CPM once again is leading the way for commitment and Pioneer is bringing us excellent titles. All we need now is The Right Stuff to bring us Tylor and for AnimeVillage to join the game.

NEWS: 08/24/98
Introducing multi-angle reviews! This will be an ongoing project, and the first installment is now in place. Under the Ghost in the Shell review, you'll find a tag for "View angle X". These are reviews provided by readers of the page and some of the upcoming columnists to the site. There are a couple of changes coming up soon, and I hope you enjoy them!

The Night Warriors: Darkstalkers Revenge #1 DVD review is up.

I'm very glad to see the forum getting a lot more use this past week. Once I get through my first month here at Interland and see what my usage is (and whether I have to upgrade to a more expensive hosting plan), I'll look into getting a better forum, probably similar to the one seen on the Home Theater Forum, DVD Resource and TheForce.net.

Speaking of which, if any advertisers are out there looking for a place to advertise anime or DVD, I'm very cheap. Just trying to cover costs here is all!

I've seen a lot of comment on the forum on the best way to present TV series on DVD, anywhere from 2-22 episodes per disc. I think the best way for it to be done is to look at the newly reviewed Darkstalkers. Two episodes, at 45 minutes each, with a 5.1 soundtrack as well as a 2.0 one plus extras, all fit on a single layer disc. I believe that 4 episodes per disc at 29.95 providing both languages (if available) with subtitles and some production/cultural notes for 29.95 is the best way to get into this market. More episodes aren't needed, and the 4 at 25 minutes each would fit on a single layer perfectly without requiring the hassle of going dual-layered in these heavy production days. Single layer discs generally mean low to no delays. Of course, that's just my opinion.

NEWS: 08/20/98
Well, first the bad news. It looks as if the Darkstalkers disc has been delayed until 9/1. Though I've got one report that it is in at one anime place.

Animenation definitely has two early discs, Area 88 Part 1 and Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer. Yay!

Laserviews CONFIRMS Iria for next week as well as Roujin Z! NEXT WEEK IS ANIME WEEK! :)

And in a curious turn, after getting a couple of emails from people, it looks as if AD Vision is now supporting DVD! One post on the forum from "TexasDan" seems legit enough, though I'd love to get an email from him to confirm it. Keep up the faith everyone! If it's true, we just need to work on Anime Village now!

NEWS: 08/18/98
And the page redesign goes as I settle into our new home. Slowly it goes, as I keep typing geocities.com instead of animeondvd.com. Never mind the fact that I picked up one of those new fangled Windows style keyboards and can't type for my life...

Be sure to check out the contest link, as it's now officially over and we have a winner!

NEWS: 08/14/98
Welcome to the new Anime on DVD! I've just gone through and (hopefully) updated the majority of links and what not. If you find some that aren't updated, send me an email about it. I'll be doing the majority of the next batch of fixes and updates come Monday, when we also announce the winner of our first contest. If you haven't already, check out the details at the left - there's still time to get in on the deal!

NEWS: 08/13/98
The petitions are once again fully updated... over 350 for Eva! Not much in the way of true news today, but a bit of rambling from me should keep things exciting, yes? My domain name has been approved, and I'm in (hopefully) the last few phases of setting up www. AnimeonDVD.com by early next week. This is all due to you guys, the fans of these two great things. I hope that once I get the site up and running, I'll be able to solidify some avenues of communication with some of the anime companies.

AnimeVillage, the U.S. division of Bandai, officially opened their site today to visitors, though you can't buy anything yet. What struck me as totally hilarious and right on was that in the forums, there are already several threads with fans begging/demanding/asking nicely for the shows on DVD. Way to go guys! For what it's worth, the Anime DVD Support Campaign already has an Escaflowne petition running... maybe he'll start up the other Bandai shows as well *nudge nudge*.

After going through the petition lists this evening, it once again strikes me just how many women out there are into the anime DVD thing. Now, I'm in no way being sexist... the wife won't let me. I just think it's a great thing, especially when you consider that for quite a number of years, technology oriented things like DVD just didn't get women involved. I hope to hear from more of you and if you want to make any contributions, I'm more than game. It's the readers out there, both male and female, that make this place what it is.

NEWS: 08/10/98
10:15 AM - Well, looks as if Fox had to go and blow my entire Fox=AD Vision correlations. Nice going Fox. Course, I don't like your predatory 34.98 pricing, so expect me to be selective.

NEWS: 08/08/98
There were lots of street date changes yesterday from Laserviews, and I'll be updating later tonight with those. Not much else new otherwise. I've posted the latest of my editorials. I may be trying to live up to the image that the Team DVD reviewer gave me of someone who speaks his mind. We'll see if I don't make a total fool of myself. Feedback to email is always welcome, though I also encourage forum discussions to bring everyone into it.

PETITION NEWS: 08/05/98
Evangelion has broken 300 names. How long will ADV hold out? Probably for awhile. I invite them to either post on our forum or send me an email regarding their stance on DVD so that the fans who want to give them money, most likely for something they've already purchased once, again.

Also in petition news, Ranma breaks 250, which bodes well for Viz and their TV series possibility. Maison Ikkoku has broken 200, as well as Tenchi Muyo. Pioneer? Get pressing! We've got the money if you've got the product!

NEWS: 08/04/98
Well, depending on who you believe, Paramount announced their initial list of titles. While not anime news, it bodes quite well for the anime format. Check out any of the regular DVD pages listed in the links section for more info.

Image had their newest previews put out today. Sadly, they're only giving us one anime title, and it's Fist of the Northstar at that. There's limited information at this time, so don't expect much in the info page.

Just a touch of late summer cleaning on the page today, moving things forward for a new month. Check out our new polling page to the left, which has let me ditch the quizlet.

Responses so far are good for the Divi-Chan contest! Let's keep those submissions streaming in here!

NEWS: 08/03/98
August is upon us, and boy am I enjoying this great weather. Actually, that's sarcasm, as I'm in the midst of an eleven day work week at the moment. One interesting piece of news at the moment is from the PAC newsletter from Pioneer, listing a Fatal Fury movie on DVD on 01/26/98. My birthday no less! Hopefully we'll see more announcements between now and then, beyond the new Ranma movie.

I'd also like to make notice of a link on the left for the first Anime on DVD contest! Check it out and let me know of any questions/feedback in the forum!
