Advance review
(09:23 PM EST):
Due out next week is the first DVD only release in the US in the
anime scene,
Tenamonya Voyagers from Bandai Entertainment. We got in our copy from them
today and spent the evening taking it in.
New title announcements
(04:08 PM EST):
They've bucked the odds and gotten the date. The Right Stuf will be
releasing the entire Irresponsible Captain Tylor series on DVD on
12/19/2000! And in a way I really prefer, you can either get it whole hog in
one big box set or you can buy the disc individually one at a time. Hold onto
those wallets folks, December just got a bit more expensive!

Newly reviewed
(09:41 PM EST):
The final volume of
Key the
Metal Idol came into us over the weekend and we've finally compiled a few
thoughts on this disc. Let the debate begin for the Essential Collection
begin.
Thar be gold in them thar DVD's
(04:38 PM EST):
All right, pardon me for the slang. Word has come in that the
Mysterious Cities of Gold, always a cult favorite among anime fans, has
finally seen a DVD release in France. There's no English or Japanese on it,
but this may be enough for some fans to try and get a hold of. Check out
this page for more info.
Petitions
(04:35 PM EST):
Dan Zapix sent in an update on his petitions today, with ones now
running for a subtitled version of Urotsukidoji III and IV as
well as Dragonball Z. Check out our
petition section for those links
and more.
R2 showings
(04:24 PM EST):
We got an email notice today that the folks in the Toronto based
anime club, Anime Extreme, are planning to show some hot recent R2 English
subtitled DVD's at their next showing. Check out the info
here.

Site notice
(10:51 PM EST):
During this coming month of November, my day to day scheduled for
two weeks are rather turned around. Normally I work a Wednesday through
Saturday schedule, which is why you see heavier updates during the beginning
of the week. Next week, I'm being sent off to a class for work (Mastering NT
Core Technologies, for those who are curious) which is a Monday through Friday
thing, and I still get to work Saturday. I'll be doing this again later in the
month as well. So I might be a bit behind in answering our email and will
likely not be perusing the forum as regulalry as I do now.
However, we will have some sweet new reviews this week. Tuesday I should be
receiving review copies of Sakura Diaries 2, Samurai X 2,
Lost Universe 3, Gasaraki 2 and.... Neon Genesis Evangelion 2.
Of course, Eva 2 will be the first on our plate and we'll make our way through
everything else after that, hopefully all of it by the weekend (in addition to
a variety of other titles I'm expecting). We'll still be busy! And we're going
to top off the week next Sunday with another Boston area gathering!
November contest
(10:43 PM EST):
We've kicked off our first of hopefully two
November contests
today. This contest is being graciously sponsored by the good folks at
Right Stuf who has supplied us with a copy of Urban Vision's Vampire
Hunter D DVD!
Ladycat turns 40
(10:26 PM EST):
Or rather, she turns in her
40th column today!
Hardware
(10:09 PM EST):
Richard Stewart has sent in a solid review of a rather interesting
looking piece of equipment, the
Sony DAV-300 DVD player
& more. While the US tends to get the standard black boxes, there's quite a
number of interesting designs being used elsewhere in the world.
Alternate angles
(10:00 PM EST):
Two new alternate angles have made their way through today.
Lawrence Chu takes a look at the recent
Rurouni Kenshin
Vol. #2 while Eric McGillicudy looks at the
Bubblegum Crisis: Hurricane Live disc.
CPM talks Slayers
(09:19 PM EST):
The CPM site was updated late this week with
information about the audio problems encountered on the Japanese track of
the first Slayers DVD collection. If you've had problems with this
track, they're going above and beyond to at least make sure you can enjoy the
series itself until they can (possibly) get corrected discs into their queue.

CPM Press
(05:08 PM EST):
The folks at CPM have sent out their
press releases for January titles for
both VHS & DVD. Couple of good titles coming out, though I'm still
disappointed about the whole Overfiend lack of subtitles fiasco.
Looking forward to
Virgin Fleet though.
More on Manga
(04:54 PM EST):
Reader "Ken" sent us in some info he got from the folks at Manga
regarding some of the upcoming releases. First, many people are asking where
the Blackjack movie is, as that disc has had its date move all over the
place this year. Fear not, it's still coming, though no definite date has been
set. A guesstimate of May at the earliest was mentioned though. The Shadow
Skill movie is indeed the three OVA's. It's been named a movie to
differentiate it from the TV series as the casual consumer has no clue what an
OVA is.
In a surprising move, the four Street Fighter IIV TV DVD's will
contain the entire 29 episode series. Three of them will have seven episodes
while the fourth will have eight. It's not been determined which disc will
have the eight episodes though.

More rumors
(09:00 PM EST):
After posting the Biohunter rumor earlier today, I received
multiple confirmations from varying sources (very reliable ones) on this title
for a January release.
It also looks like Nutech, the folks who worked on several titles for
Central Park Media, are being tapped to do something else for them next year
in the form of the subtitled-only series Votoms. Here's hoping they do
DVD subtitles for that.
Manga updates
(08:58 PM EST):
The folks at Manga have updated
their coming attractions section with a lot of info for next year:
- 1/30 - Street Alpha Movie
- 2/27 - Street Fighter II V - Vol.1
- 2/27 - Street Fighter II V - Vol.2
- 2/27 - Street Fighter II V - Vol.3
- 2/27 - Street Fighter II V - Vol.4
- 3/27 - Amon Saga
- 3/27 - Bounty Dog
- 3/27 - Dark Myth
- 4/24 - Blood
- 4/24 - Appleseed
- 4/24 - Black Magic
- 5/29 - Shadow Skill Movie
- 5/29 - Tokyo Revelation
- 5/29 - Landlock
- 6/26 - Psychic Wars
- 6/26 - X The Movie
- 8/28 - Violence Jack
- 9/25 - Vampire Wars
- 10/30 - Giant Robo Vol. 1
- 10/30 - Giant Robo Vol. 2
Definitely a solid line up from Manga for the first half of the year. We'll
be adding these to our upcoming list this coming weekend. According to a note
at the bottom of their page, "Just because this [page] lists all movies
through most of 2001, this doesn't mean this [Evangelion] movie won't
be coming out before then
Rumored title
(05:51 PM EST):
We got in a tidbit from an anonymous source today about a January
release that we could be seeing from Urban Vision. On January 30th, we'll be
seeing them release Biohunter on DVD.
In official Urban Vision news, we got this late yesterday:
"The UCLA Film & Television Archives has slightly altered the order
of films screening on Halloween at the James Bridges Theater:
On Tuesday, October 31st, Vampire Hunter D, the new movie, will
screen first at 7:30pm. After a brief intermission, Angel's Egg
will follow.
Free copies of Vampire Hunter D Special Edition DVD (the
original video) will be given out as prizes at the screening!
Don't miss out on these fantastic films! Remember, tickets will only go on
sale the day of the screening, approximately one hour prior to showtime! For
directions and other inquiries, please visit
www.cinema.ucla.edu
for more information."

New title announcement
(06:53 PM EST):
ADV is furthering its goal of world domination with the
announcement of a new DVD on our forum earlier this evening:
The Dirty Pair Flash: Angels in Trouble DVD has been given a street
date of 11/28/00. This disc contains all 6 episodes of the show released on
VHS as Dirty Pair Flash Acts 1, 2 and 3 with an approx runtime of 160 minutes.
English and Japanese audio with English subs. Extras include Production
Portfolio, Textless Opening, Character Bios, and all three of the original ADV
DP Flash Trailers. MSRP is $29.98.
Petitions
(02:21 PM EST):
A couple of new petitions
have gone up today, this time for GaoGaiGar, Transformers & Beast
Wars and the Tenchi Muyo Mihoshi OVA/Pretty Sammy shows. We've also
pulled a couple. Thanks to the folks who let us know that they've stopped
their petitions.
The racks
(02:10 PM EST):
Wouldn't you know, I put up my
Studio Challenge
yesterday and the most comments I get are "Dude, where'd you get the great
racks?!". For all who are asking, they're made by a gentleman in Boston who
sells them via the music chain Newbury
Comics. They aren't listed in their online store though. They run about
55$ and hold quite a number of DVD's.
Alternate angles
(02:04 PM EST):
We'll be posting some new alternate angle reviews throughout the
day today, so keep an eye out here.
Sucky news
(12:29 PM EST):
Some news filtered in today about a couple of titles from Central
Park Media due out early next year. When originally listed, Urotsukidoji
III and Urotsukidoji IV, it was indicated that they would have
subtitles on them. According to a forum post from a CPM rep today, these
titles will not be subtitled. They will contain the Japanese language track
however.
Yeah, they're hentai. So what? When Nightmare Campus got announced,
CPM went and made sure that there were subtitles for it since no sub VHS
release was ever made. Of course, hardly anyone's heard of Nightmare Campus,
so they never knew about the lack of subtitles before. But Urotsukidoji?
That's still got name recognition out there and I (and even my wife) are not
happy at all about this situation. Why bother to have the Japanese language on
there at all? That costs money to have put on the disc. It's essentially a
waste.
While CPM has only recently started to release more material per month,
they have been a solid support of the format since practically day one with
the first US anime DVD. But decisions like these don't help peoples views, and
combined with other recent issues, has lowered the credibility level of CPM in
the eyes of many.

Throwing down the gauntlet
(06:27 PM EST):
I'm in a rather good mood today, so it's with a smile and a wink
that I thrown down the gauntlet and challenge the studios to our first
Anime on DVD
Studio Challenge!
New title announcements
(06:05 PM EST):
ADV Films has sent out their latest
press release today, though it
focuses solely on their dub VHS release of Sailor Moon. They are
however pricing it at a rather nice 12.98 per tape, so expect these to start
taking over space in the anime VHS section of Suncoast and expect ADV to make
some solid cash on it. I wonder how many new series they'll be buying off of
this venture?
New title announcements
(05:52 PM EST):
The folks at Right Stuf are listing a new disc from Central Park
Media. Due on 5/8/01 with a running time of 60 minutes, the erotic adventure
Pure Love makes its way to DVD. We took a few moments perusing the CPM
site to see if we could find out more about it (but alas, no). While browsing
through their DVD release list, we did notice something I'm not sure if it was
covered before. No date was given, but Shamanic Princess is listed for
release. This title got a lot of buzz during its VHS release and at that time,
no indication of any DVD release. Of course, this may have been listed for
awhile now and we just don't remember covering it.
Sunday, October 22nd, 2000

Newly reviewed
(00:05 AM EST):
A late night viewing Friday night was the setting for
Patlabor 2.
There's just something really good about watching a movie like this in near
total darkness, letting only what's on the screen occupy your attention.
Saturday, October 21st, 2000

Newly reviewed
(10:46 PM EST):
Our copy of
Rurouni Kenshin
Vol. #2 arrived earlier this week and we sat down over the past couple of
nights to take in the goodness that is Kenshin.
New title announcements
(05:42 PM EST):
Two new discs announced for two very different groups today. On
1/16/2001, you can get the subtitled uncut Card Captor Sakura Vol. #2
with four episodes, or on the same day you can get Cardcaptors Vol. #2,
which contains three cut and out of order English language episodes.
Petitions
(04:59 PM EST):
Per the request of the petition holder, we've removed the Sailor
Moon TV petition, since in one form or another, it is coming. In its
place, he's kicked off a petition to get the classic Go-Lion series
brought out. Check out the petitions
page for that link and many more.

Region 2 goodness
(06:08 PM EST):
I don't know how blind I was, but I completely missed this title in
some of the recent CD Japan announcements. Due in Japan on a region 2 encoded
DVD on 12/16, Grave of the Fireflies (Hotaru no Haka) makes its
entrance. There's some very significant things about this release, even if you
have the all region version released by Central Park Media in the US. This new
region 2 version will be a new anamorphic transfer, it will have English
subtitles (presumably the ones used from the Ghibli film tour) and will have
interviews with Director Isao Takahata, Designer Akiyuki Nosaka, and their
comments on the making of the film, though it's unknown if those are actually
subtitled (I'm guessing not). The sweetest thing about it? 3,129 yen or 29.44$
by today's conversion rate. I am so sold, and this gives great hope in my eyes
that future Ghibli titles that have been on the worldwide film tour will also
be subtitled.
New title announcements
(06:00 PM EST):
The latest press release
came in today from ADV Films. This time around, we've got the announcement for
the upcoming Slayers: Book of Spells OVA collection, something or other
on VHS, and then the fifth volume of Lost Universe.

Manga rocks in November
(06:55 PM EST):
I'm not keeping it secret at all. I'm very much looking forward to
two particular releases in November, and both are coming from Manga, and one
of them is likely to be my disc of the year. Check out the release information
on Macross II and Wings of Honneamise
here.

Sentai power!
(08:27 PM EST):
Ok, we can clear up two issues this evening with one particular
disc. What's up with Shinesman is one of the more frequent questions I
get these days. According to the Media Blasters site, it's listed as 24.95 and
most retailers list it as 29.95. According to an email posted via the forum
earlier today, the 29.95$ price is the correct one. As for where the disc is?
It's being tentatively set for approximately two weeks. We'll post more when
we know more.

BGC Mega Set update
(03:46 PM EST):
We've been in contact with the folks at Multimedia 2000 regarding
the couple hundred sets of the Mega Set that Express recently got in. From
what several people are figuring is that for this small number that shouldn't
have gotten out is that it's essentially the new set packaging with the old
set inside, plus the new fourth disc. The folks at Multimedia 2000 are asking
that if you indeed managed to get one of these early bad sets is to drop them
an email and send the package off to them. When the real set is ready (within
2-3 weeks), they'll ship you the new one and cover postage costs both ways.
"In order to better serve the community have them contact me
directly with any issues. We will begin shipping the Mega Series in 2-3 weeks.
I will make certain that everyone is as happy as possible with our remedy. -
Greg Hutchinson, M2K."
Canadians get it on
(03:44 PM EST):
Having known several of the folks involved at the University of
Manitoba Anime Club, I like to let people in that area known when big stuff
goes in with them. They've sent me the following today:
"UMAnime will be hosting a Open house Saturday Oct, 21st. Everyone
is welcome, and it’s totally free. We use this event to give people a look at
what the club has to offer to them. For this Open house we have 3 showing
rooms with 15ft Screens, one for Anime movies, one for anime series, and one
for HK action Movies (Mostly Jet Li). There will be a small gaming room as
well as an events room, which will host the Art Display/selling, Anime
auction, and Anime Game Show. Local Vendors will also be present. Draws for
prizes will happen throughout the day.
It begins at 12:30 – 11PM, you can come through out the day and and check
it out. We will also be selling our clubs very own Fanzine again, issue #2.
If you have any other questions contact the club at
umanime@yahoo.com. Or visit are website
at http://www.umanime.home.dhs.org"
Anime on big screen
(10:00 AM EST):
If you've got a hankering for anime on the big screen and if you're
close to the El Capitan Theater on Hollywood Boulevard, they will be showing
two anime films on Sunday, October the 22nd. First is Laputa: Castle in the
Sky at 1:30 PM. This will be followed by Spriggan at 4:30PM. You
can find out more here.
It's not anime!
(09:56 AM EST):
Usually every couple of days we get questions about animation
that's not anime. While I have been able to direct people to better sources of
animation, someone is starting up a new site dedicated solely to this area
(and not delving into anime!). Check out Keith Finch's
Animation on DVD site!
Kenshin extended!
(09:45 AM EST):
Merideth Mulroney from Media Blasters let us know this morning that
they're extending their Kenshin fanart
contest! "We are Extending our contest deadline to November 10th. Our
video production guys told me we would have plenty of time. we've gotten a ton
of great entries already and I want to make sure everyone has enough time to
do the best work they can."
Escaflowne Omake
(09:49 AM EST):
I have to admit I didn't really want to add this piece of omake to
the list, as it's listed on the insert for the booklet and mentioned in
reviews. But when you get probably fifty or so entries for it...
check it out!
She's back!
(09:44 AM EST):
LadyCat is back today with another fun filled action packed
Ask LadyCat column! She's
one step away from her 40th column!
Useful information
(09:30 AM EST):
We recently received a link to
this page, which
I'm sure a lot of people will find really helpful. It's entire focus is on
pirated anime goods and how you can tell which ones to avoid and much more
information about it as well.
Alternate angle
(09:08 AM EST):
Only one new one so far today, this time Roman Martel continues to
take an in-depth look at Cowboy Bebop with the
Session 5
disc.
Whoops
(08:52 AM EST):
It's really rather amusing only if you've just woken up (as I have)
and you get an email like this. Mike Schmitz noticed something odd about the
recently released Trigun Vol. #4 and a difference between the chromium
cover and the regular paper cover. On the Chromium cover, the title of the
show is listed as "Gun-Ho Guns" while on the paper cover it's "Gung-Ho Guns".
Ok, ok, everyone giggle and move along, cause the first person to demand a
recall will get smacked upside the head.
Digital Omake
(08:48 AM EST):
There's still more omake I need to add to the list (I am getting to
it!), but one reader quizzed the Bandai reps at the Nan Desu Kan convention
this past weekend about the seeming volumes of omake on the two Jubei-Chan
DVD's:
"It would seem that there are still "numerous" easter eggs to be
found on both disk one and disk 2. I decided to send this info in just in case
anyone had given up once the first "2" had been found on disk 1. Richard also
said that all of the disks will contain Easter Eggs, but he was unwilling to
give specifics.
In addition the two "Americans" on disk 1 are Bandai-America staff members
(this was the original question), but Richard didn't give me their names
(they're famous enough as is, I guess)."
So crack open those discs guys, time to find them all out! Thanks to Darren
Bills for pinning the Bandai folks about this.

DBZ delays
(04:39 PM EST):
AnimeNation has posted some new information about the upcoming "Android"
segment of the Dragonball Z DVD releases: Funimation has alerted
vendors and distributors that the Dragonball Z androids saga DVDs 1-3
(Androids: Invasion, Dr. Gero & Assassins) scheduled for release at the end of
this month and next month, have been delayed until an undetermined future
release date. DVD volume 4, Invincible, was not mentioned in the press
release, but presumably it would also be affected by the delay.
Contest completes
(04:15 PM EST):
Our latest
contest, which
included 3 Gundam Wing DVD's, a graphic novel and some toys, has come to a
close and we have a winner! We should be starting off a new contest next week,
or rather eight new contests...
Newly reviewed
(02:51 PM EST):
The next one on our list is the chock full of
anime box set from Central Park Media, the
Slayers Collection.
Site gatherings
(01:31 PM EST):
Two more site gatherings are brewing now that
some of you may want to know about, especially after hearing about how well
the past couple have gone. A new Boston gathering is being planned for
November 5th and a sizeable New York City one on November 11th. Check out the
Conventions & Gatherings forum for more information.
Newly reviewed
(01:24 PM EST):
Next up on our list is the double disc
collection from Bandai,
Outlaw Star.
We were really surprised by this show, having gone in with somewhat low
expectations.
Newly announced
(11:52 AM EST):
Only shortly after getting the release date,
Slayers: The Book of Spells OVA DVD from ADV Films has started to make
its way to retailers listings for its 11/21 release.
Newly reviewed
(10:19 AM EST):
We spent a lot of time this weekend
watching anime (25 episodes in fact!), so throughout today we'll be getting
some reviews up. First on the list is
Trigun Vol. #4.
3 2 1 Contact!
(09:28 AM EST):
Just a quick note that if you're sending us
email, we've updated our contact
information page. This is not aimed at anyone in particular. This
is just a change in general due to the larger volume of email we are receiving
lately.

Con news
(05:02 PM EST):
Ok, some initial information has made its way
in from the ADV panel at Nan Desu Kan. First up, and surely to get people
talking on the forum, ADV has snared the rights to the first two seasons of
Sailor Moon from DiC. No other information is available at this time, please
don't harass me or the ADV reps in the forum about it. Thank you.
In more DVD related news, several titles were
formally announced:
- Slayers OAVs - Nov 21st - 1 disc
- Blue Seed - 4 discs
- Gunsmith Cats - 1 disc (not sure if I heard right here)
- Dirty Pair Flash Mission 1 - 1 disc
- Those Who Hunt Elves - 2 discs (6 episodes a disc/29.99 @)
More details as they become available.
Saturday, October 14th, 2000

Alternate angles
(11:11 PM EST):
We'll have two new reviews up of our own
tomorrow (Trigun 4 and Outlaw Star 1) but in the meantime we've got a few new
alternate angle reviews up from our backlog.
Not so mega?
(09:32 PM EST):
Over the past week and especially during the
last few days, we've gotten more email and seen more posting by folks who've
gotten copies of the new Bubblegum Crisis Mega Set. Some retailers have
managed to get copies in, though not entire runs. These sets have been
confirmed as being the new package and not just the old one sent out again (I
have it myself already). However, there appears to be a serious problem. The
problems from the first set don't seem to be fixed. According to a post to the
AnimEigo mailing list by Anime Prime
webmaster Jim Lazar, the problems on the new set are the following:
- All eps: Subs blink when there are two speakers or dialog/songs onscreen
at
the same time.
- Ep 2: At the start of the episode as the opening music dies down when
Leon
is checking out the damage subs diapear for 3-4 seconds when Leon is
talking. The first part of his statement is on screen very breifly and the
rest of the statement pops up for a second or so after the 3-4 seconds of no
subs.
- Ep 4: Subs are about 1-2 seconds early throughout the episode
- Ep 5: Subs are about 2-3 seconds early throughout the episode
- Ep 7 & 8: Faint beeping in the Japanese audio track
- Ep 8: Subs are about 1-2 seconds early throughout the episode
- Eps 1,3,6: no problems seen.
It's been some time since the original set was released, so I honestly
don't recall all the problems involved with it. However, the ones listed above
definitely sound very familiar. While it's too early to say for sure exactly
what's going on as we've not heard from either AnimEigo or M2K, I wouldn't be
in too much of a rush to get this package, especially if you're upgrading.
We've only had time to check out the new 4th disc which looks pretty good, but
that's only about ten minutes worth of it. Keep an eye on our general forum
for more details.
We're off to see the wizard...
(05:36 PM EST):
We're playing around with a bit of an
addition to our reviews. With the recent concerns about rainbows on such discs
like Trigun and (to me) Escaflowne, people have suggested pulling that rating
out of the overall video rating as it's something that seems to be really
dependent on your gear.
A nice five pronged rating, with all five indicating a pure
rainbow fest. Am I serious or is it in jest? Add your thoughts to the
continuing rainbow discussions that started yesterday in the forum.
ADV hints
(04:50 PM EST):
Couple of things to cover here. According to
some information posted on Fans View
from the Nan Desu Kan convention currently underway, "a" company has managed
to swipe another companies title right from under them and will be announcing
it shortly either at the con or on Monday. Bandai has been ruled out as being
involved either way, so that leaves the field somewhat more defined.
Speculation runs rampant on the forum. Most peoples money are (wisely) on ADV
having done something. Those kids, can't leave them alone for a minute.
In unrelated ADV news, David Williams posted a tidbit
to our forum today regarding the first Those Who Hunt Elves series.
This series is constantly requested on our forums (and in email to us). The
current plan, though no dates are formally set, is to have this twelve episode
series spread across two discs, six episodes a disc, with a retail price of
29.99$.

UY on goes DVD again
(08:41 PM EST):
The folks at
AnimEigo have kicked off the preorder
section for the second box set of Urusei Yatsura. From what I
can tell, if you put in for a preorder for it the first time around, you
should be all set this time, but in case you aren't sure they provide an email
contact address on their UY page. Expected release is early January or
just before Christmas if they can make it. That wouldn't surprise me,
especially after hearing that the MoS (Minions of Shin) have been hard at work
on the set while he toils away on Macross.
Request for discussion
(08:39 PM EST):
One thing I've been wondering the past couple
of weeks, especially after the Escaflowne DVD, is just how much the
moire, or "rainbow", problems should actually factor into reviews. With these
showing up in both old and new shows and throughout regular prime time US TV
(and the evening news, etc), just how much should these influence the video
gradings? I'd like to hear your thoughts on this in our general forum.
Time's running out!
(06:45 PM EST):
Tomorrow night is the last night that the
current contest
runs through, so don't forget to enter! The prize this time is the first three
Gundam Wing DVD's, a Gundam Wing graphic novel and a classic couple of mobile
suit toys!
New in Region 2
(06:24 PM EST):
For those with the cash to burn or the
ultimate love of certain shows, the latest listings from
CD Japan have arrived. What's
noteworthy? Rose of Versailles box set, more DiGi Charat and
what I'm really psyched for, the first two Gunbuster OVA's on one disc
for a pricey 60$. What's interesting to note is the addition of more live
action movies of Japanese origin that are containing English subtitles. If
you've heard of any of the ones listed in here, drop us a line in the
off-topic area of the forum and tell us what you thought of them.
Wings clarified
(06:18 PM EST):
We got in the word today from Manga on the
Wings of Honneamise Japanese audio track. Not too surprisingly, the track
will indeed be the original 2.0 mix. While no reason was given for it,
speculation runs rampant on the forum. My guess, along with a few others, is
that Gainax either wouldn't license it or wanted a bucketload of money.
Personally, I'm psyched to get the audio commentary and having the original
audio mix is a good thing. For those who want the Japanese 5.1 mix, I'd
recommend trying to find a copy of the Japanese disc, which is indeed region
0.

Alternate angles
(09:10 PM EST):
We're catching up a bit with our backlog of
alternate angle reviews (thank you for your patience). This should continue
through the weekend.
New title announcements part 2
(07:25 PM EST):
Just when you thought it would be a quiet
news day, bunches of new things get announced. Media Blasters has announced
two new titles for January, both due on 1/30/2001. The Earthian Angelic
Collection will run 29.95 while the Ninku/Yu Yu Hakusho Movie Double
Feature will run 19.95$. On 11/28/2000, Manga will release the Macross
II OVA series on one single disc for the sweet price of 29.95.
And in probably the single most anticipated release
by yours truly, 11/28 will see the confirmed release date of the magnificent
Wings of Honneamise movie. According to the preliminary information
available at
Express, the disc will be anamorphic, have deleted
scenes, an audio commentary, a photo gallery and theatrical trailer. On the
audio front, the English track will be the newly remastered 5.1 track. The
Japanese track is listed as a surround track. This information may not be
accurate though, and I have sent in an inquiry to the folks at Manga to see if
we can get the final word.
New title announcements
(05:38 PM EST):
The folks at ADV Films are continuing to
crank them out with a new press
release heralding two more titles due on 1/23. This time around,
the 3rd volumes of both Bubblegum Crisis 2040 and Martian Successor
Nadesico.

Anime in the City
(09:13 PM EST):
A great detailed
report/review came
in this evening of many of the movies shown during the NY Anime Film Festival
this weekend from Abood Rabbat. Settle into your chair and check it out!
Black Heaven
(07:50 PM EST):
We recently got in a promotional copy of the
upcoming Black Heaven show on VHS in dub form and took a little time to
check out. We made it through the first episode before the scrolling lines and
other VHS issues had us rolling on the floor in pain. The show itself seems
rather interesting though and while it has some standard anime things to it,
it looks a bit more unique in some areas. The show revolves around a workaday
salaryman who used to be in a huge rock band. The initial episode is fairly
slow as you get into his routine lifestyle and his dealings at work. There are
flairs of his old personality that push through at times, but he's definitely
down under the thumb of oppression. What can get him out of the rut? It looks
like aliens who need his rocking power to save the galaxy will get him back
into the groove.
The dub sounded pretty good though some of the
secondary characters had us cringing. Animation style is nothing like the
cover or the promo some people saw, which is essentially the opening sequence.
The songs are done by John Sykes and it's definitely a great soundtrack.
According to the materials we received, both the VHS and the DVD will contain
a chromium card version of the cover. Hopefully Pioneer will create a binder
at some point where people can store all of these to view them in one easy
place. If it wasn't for the double threat of dub and VHS, we probably would
have made it through all four episodes. As it is, I'm very much looking
forward to the DVD due at the end of the month.
More Bandai details
(06:38 PM EST):
The folks at
Anime News Service have posted
some more tidbits from AWA and Bandai's panel.
- February will see the release of Gundam Wing Endless Waltz on VHS and
DVD, both will feature chromium covers, the DVD will include a Dolby Digital
5.1 audio track, the 3 OVA's plus the Endless Waltz Movie.
- Summer 2001 is being billed as Gundam DVD blockbuster release season,
the original Gundam TV Series, 0083, 0080, and M.S. 08th team are all
planned.
- Bandai's first live action release, Dark Soldier D is out in a few
months.
More ADV details
(06:38 PM EST):
The folks at
Anime News Service have posted
some more tidbits from AWA and ADV's panel.
- ADV mentioned that they have several DVD authoring houses working on
multiple discs and very soon (next month perhaps) fans can expect to see a
DVD flood of 1 back catalog title being released per week, the DVD 9 format
is going to be utilized as well. Back catalog titles in the works are
Slayers OVA's, Dirty Pair and Dirty Pair Flash, a Gunsmith Cats disc with
all three episodes and extras like the "making of", Curse of the Undead
Yoma, Blue Seed in 4 disc releases with episodes as 7/7/6/6 on the discs.
- Blue Seed discs will retail at $29.98
- ADV is seeking the Omake ("SD Nadia" etc..) extras for the Nadia DVD
release, a company other than Gainax has the rights to these.
Site gatherings
(06:11 PM EST):
It's looking like the next gathering of site
readers is going to be in New York City. There's a good sized group that's
forming and the date appears to be set for November 11th. Check the
Conventions & Gatherings forum for more. And if you're a cosplayer, check
out the "Looking for volunteers" thread! ;)
New title announcement
(05:16 PM EST):
We'd mentioned this one coming earlier, but
the official word on it hit today. On 3/13/2001 we'll be treated to the erotic
horror anime known as Demon Warrior Koji. With a running time of 120
minutes, Central Park Media has set the MSRP at 29.99$.
AnimEigo follow-ups
(02:33 PM EST):
The folks at
AnimEigo have updated their site with
information pertaining to this weekends announcements as well as a bit more on
titles to expect in the pipeline. We've made a copy of it
here for future reference as
well. And while you're reading it, play the game to see how many things Shin
is personally involved in! Those who were at Otakon and at the DVD panel will
surely acknowledge what Shin talked about during that time!
More announcements
(10:45 AM EST):
Forum regular Sapphire posted some
interesting information from the New York City Anime Film Festival that went
on this weekend as well. CPM announced it had the Angel Sanctuary
OVA's, and that the Utena contract was still being hammered out. Urban
Vision was asked about Berserk and the rep answered they did not have
it. Checking out the Urban Vision site, they list this with Berserk:
"Well, we are currently unable to complete licensing negotiations at
this time. We are not at liberty to say what our release schedule and format
will be, since we are waiting for confirmation on the contract before we can
plan anything."
Top ten
(08:59 AM EST):
We've updated the top ten section for the
month of October so far, which you can check out
here.
Divi-chan Strips
(08:59 AM EST):
Well, sort of! The latest
Divi-Chan strip has arrived!
AnimEigo clarifies
(08:41 AM EST):
According to a post to their mailing list
this morning, AnimEigo CEO Robert Woodhead cleared up a few things. First, the
next set of Urusei Yatsura is looking for a January release, though
they're hoping to sneak it in just in time for Christmas. It will be the next
20 episodes of the TV series. In regards to the first box set, all sets have
been shipped to customers except for those whom they've had trouble billing.
Haven't got your set? Get in touch with them as they may not have the correct
contact info.
Slayers petition, take 2
(08:20 AM EST):
A second petition has come up for the
Slayers set, this time in regards to about 50 seconds of missing footage
at the very end episode. This footage was originally on the sub VHS release
but was (accidentally?) omitted on the dub VHS release, whose masters were
used for the DVD. Click
here to check it out.
ADV Films con news
(07:55 AM EST):
ADV reps also made a few announcements when
not chasing cosplayers around the convention:
- Super Milk-chan and Steel Angel Kurumi (Kotetsu Tenshi
Kurumi) were announced as the newest acquisitions. You can check out a
region 2 review here of
Super Milk-chan and here for
Steel Angel
Kurumi.
- The informal polling from a few week back has yielded results. The top 5
demanded titles were:
1. Gunsmith Cats
2. Blueseed
3. Sorcerer Hunters
4. Dirty Pair OVA
5. Those Who Hunt Elves
These discs should be produced in that order, and are literally only months
(weeks?) away. Extras, like the Gunsmith Cats 'making-of' feature, will be
included where possible. Blueseed will be on four discs. Gunsmith Cats on
one disc.
- ADV indicated that they want to get to the point where they're releasing
one back-catalog title per month in addition to current ongoing series and
other projects.
Bandai con news
(07:45 AM EST):
The folks at Bandai dropped us a line letting
us know the announcements they've made at Anime Weekend Atlanta:
-
Both Outlaw Star & Cowboy Bebop Box Set II VHS has been
repriced to a lower $99.98 price point for both the subtitled and the dub
sets
-
Differences announced between the Escaflowne uncut VHS/DVD and the
VHS fox version. The VHS/DVD are both 8 volumes - the VHS fox version is 7
volumes - episodes count per volume are the same 4,3,3,3 etc.
- Bandai Entertainment and Viz Communications proudly announces the North
America theatrical and home video acquisition of one of the most important
films to come out Japan in the past few years - "Jin-Roh" Wolf
Brigade - planning is in its very early stages.

Review status
(08:42 AM EST):
I've been getting a few emails and posts on
the forum over the past week or so asking where certain reviews are. We are
indeed currently behind on a few reviews, partially due to so much coming out,
partially to a hectic life (after all, I do have a six month old!) and
partially because I haven't received all my discs yet. They are coming though!
Here's where we stand:
- Trigun 4: This week
- Bubblegum Crisis MegaSet: This Week
- Slayers: Unknown - disc 1 of 4 watched
- Dual: Waiting on retailer
- Outlaw Star: Waiting on retailer
- Patlabor 2: Waiting on retailer
- Pokemon's: Unknown
- FLCL 2 & 3: Another week or two
What usually happens to set things back is the order
that we review things. If we get an early copy from a studio, that goes ahead
of previously released things. That's part of the reason Slayers gets pushed
back. As is our mission statement, we will review everything that comes out.
But we're also only human and can get in only so much stuff. But it's also why
we like review copies, as it gives us a chance to spend more time with the
discs as well. Anyway, we hope to get caught up soon, at least until the
Lodoss TV box set comes out!

Newly reviewed
(11:19 PM EST):
We've completed our latest review, this time
the newest entry from ADV.
Generator Gawl
Vol. #1 is the first of four volumes comprising a twelve episode late
night TV series.
Convention news
(09:03 PM EST):
The second day of Anime Weekend Atlanta is
getting into high gear now, though some early reports are just now filtering
in. On the AnimEigo front, the good news/bad news is that Macross is
being pushed back to the spring of 2001. They're putting more money into the
restoration and are looking at getting some of the extras from the Japanese LD
release and doing some fun things with the US release (voiceless track so fans
can dub it themselves & Zentraedi subtitles are two pieces mentioned, though
their authenticity can't be verified). In its place, they're looking to put
the second Urusei Yatsura box in a December/January timeframe.
Considering the huge amount of product coming out in the next three months, my
credit card just sighed in relief.

Digital omake
(06:04 PM EST):
A new piece of
omake has shown up for the
recently released Blue Submarine No. 6 Vol. #4 disc!
New title announcements
(05:45 PM EST):
A couple of new titles have been discretely
announced today via the
Right Stuf website. On 4/10/2001, we'll see the
first of two volumes from Central Park Media of the moody late night vampire
TV series, Nightwalker. On 6/12/2001, the second and final volume will
be out. Both volumes contain six episodes and are bilingual. Price for each
volume is 29.99$. All I can say is way to go CPM!
Not directly mentioned is the tentative release date
for Gasaraki Vol. #4. The VHS volume has gotten a 3/27/2001 release
date and if ADV Films keeps up with its day and date releases, we'll see the
DVD volume the same day.
Region 2 subtitled again
(05:24 PM EST):
In a really surprising twist, the latest
CD Japan announcements today
list three English subtitled DVD's coming from Bandai of all places. The three
Gundam movies, which also apparently contains two Japanese language tracks of
an indeterminate nature, are all due on 12/21 for roughly 75$ a pop. My guess
would be that Bandai US isn't planning on releasing the movies as they're
doing the full TV series, or at least don't have plans for the movies for
quite awhile. Of course, the number of people who will snare these for the
price, especially just before Christmas, is probably pretty small. Very
tempting though.

Digital Omake
(07:25 PM EST):
John Furino has sent in a new
piece of omake he found in the
Jubei-Chan Vol. #1 DVD today, further expanding the original one found
when the disc came out back in August.
Anime influenced
(07:18 PM EST):
Yeah, I know, I don't talk much about
non-anime stuff here. Well, today I'm going to take a slight detour here (as
is my privilege as site owner) to make mention of a petition going on that's
worth signing. It appears that the folks at Warner Bros. are going to cut and
kiddiefy the upcoming Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker direct to
video move. Those who've seen the series know its anime influences and many
consider it to be one of the rare very well written mature themed animated
show to come out of the US animation studios in quite some time. To see this
happen would be a shame indeed. The folks at
Ain't It Cool News have a
petition going to try and convince Warner Bros. not to do this. Take a minute
to check it out.
Cover art
(07:14 PM EST):
We've added the cover for Trigun Vol. #5 to
our
Upcoming Release Gallery. You can also see a bunch
of upcoming covers from Media Blaster
titles on their site.
Voltron on DVD?
(07:05 PM EST):
Justin Sevakis of
DVD File sent us in a tip today that he
received from a reader. They had written to Trimark, who is the current
domestic license holder for this series and inquired on its chances of coming
to DVD:
"We will probably have a some sort of
Voltron release next year. Our DVD department is attempting to
determine what kind of interest there is, to better tailor the discs to the
fans interests. I have passed your comments to our DVD supervisor. If you
should have any other questions please let us know."
The address at Trimark to pass feedback to is:
feedback@trimarkpictures.com.
Alternate angles
(06:49 PM EST):
Amidst the busy work week, the Japanese
class, the baby and now various election debates, we're running a bit thin
here at times. The only feature to really suffer is the alternate angle
reviews. We're starting to catch up and will be almost all caught up by this
weekend, so if you've sent one in we're probably close to finalizing it. In
the meantime, we've got two we got in today. Roman Martel passes along his
views on Gasaraki Vol.
#1 and Felix Kuo passes along his on...
Gasaraki Vol. #1!
Pioneer press
(06:17 PM EST):
After a six week hiatus, the Pioneer
Entertainment site has caught up in updating their upcoming releases section.
To make things a bit easier on our side, we've compiled them all into
one big "catch up" release.
Bandai press
(06:17 PM EST):
The folks at Bandai have sent out some new press releases today.
Check out what they have to say on
Escaflowne, Don't Leave Me
Alone Daisy and Jubei-Chan Vol.
#3.

CPM details
(07:35 PM EST):
A little searching on the CPM site this evening revealed a few
interesting nuggets that are likely in the tentative stage. How does Agent
Aika on 3/13 sound? Most everything else we came across validated the
previous dates we had. Essentially it looks like CPM is moving more into the
DVD terrain and doing on average three discs a month.
Yamada details
(05:40 PM EST):
Just so it doesn't get lost in the large amount of information
below, the details have surfaced on the My Neighbors the Yamada's R2
DVD from Anime News Service:
Release date: 2000 Nov 17
Label: Jiburi ga ippai COLLECTION
Order Number: VWDZ8030
Price: 4700yen (before tax)
Distributed by Buena Vista Home Entertainment
1999/Color/Approx 104 minutes

Sound: Japanese Dolby Digital (2.0ch Surround, 5.1ch Surround), DTS (5.1ch)
Subtitle: Japanese, English, French
Screen Dimension: 16:9 Letterbox Vista size
If this information does bear out, those with region 2 capable players are
going to make out quite good. Anamorphic, Japanese, English subtitles and 5.1
DTS? I'm practically blushing from the excitement of such a great sounding
disc. And the price is even solid for a movie.
Ghibli R2 goodness
(05:34 PM EST):
According to a list from the Miyazaki Mailing List posted on
Anime News Service, the next two
years look to be quite good for fans of Ghibli movies. Only the first one,

Yamada's}

Wing & a prayer
(03:19 PM EST):
According to some emails sent to us by reader "Ken", we've got some
tentative information from Manga about their oft-delayed Wings of
Honneamise release. It's currently got an 11/28/2000 release date and it
is confirmed to be anamorphic widescreen.
For those who don't know me very well, very very few pieces of anime make
it into my "top ten" of all time favorite films, and by this I mean films, not
"movies". Film fans note the distinction. After almost twenty years of being
an anime fan in one form or another, only 3 have made it into my list.
Grave of the Fireflies ranks high, the first Kimagure Orange Road
movie ranks high and at the top of the list, higher than Kieslowski's Red
and higher than the youth/life altering Star Wars/Empire Strikes Back,
the film Wings of Honneamise has resonated as one of the most important
films that I have ever connected to in my life. I wish Manga all the best in
getting this release out this year and in what could be an above-perfection
release.
Chit chat
(11:23 AM EST):
In conjunction with the Anime Colony/Japan Society New York Anime
Film Festival (NYAFF) and the Kichijoji Character Festival, the Anime Colony
will be hosting three online chats
events with honored guests for all anime fans (attendees or non-attendees
alike) to participate. All chats are free and enable the public to ask
questions regarding their work, their opinions and their lives as well as
coverage of both festivals
CPM updates on Slayers
(11:14 AM EST):
Not much new on this front, but Justin
Sevakis of CPM has posted this update earlier this morning:
"Thanks to everybody who signed the
petition this week. We are quite impressed at the response (over 1115
signatures as of this writing). Again, this is the best way to make your voice
heard if you would like a reissue of The Slayers DVD boxed set to fix the
issues with the Japanese audio track.
There is little new to report this week on the matter, other than that we
are still looking into the feasibility of proceeding with the reissue. We are
exploring several methods of doing this, and will post more as soon as we have
it.
Again, thanks for your patience and your support.
Justin Sevakis
Production Dept., Central Park Media"
Hardware review
(11:03 AM EST):
It didn't take long after our initial request
for TV/monitor reviews that we got our first one in. Jose Gonzalez has sent in
his thoughts on his recent purchase of the
Sony 36" XBR400 unit.
Digital omake
(10:52 AM EST):
What's this? Sort of almost hidden omake on
an ADV disc? And on Gasaraki?
Check it out as well as a new
one found on Jubei-Chan Vol. #2!
Pioneer on finger puppets
(10:45 AM EST):
Several people have posted on the forum and
have sent me email asking if finger puppets were included in the third volume
of Tenchi Universe. My review copy from Pioneer did not contain any
(which is why there was no mention in the review) and the copy I bought from
my usual retailer is still wrapped as it's going to be used in a contest when
I give away the entire series. Thankfully though, Taku Otsuka from Pioneer has
posted to our studio feedback forum with information on the apparent shortage:
"We have received some emails from
consumers about not receiving finger puppets with their Tenchi Universe 3 DVD.
I believe there was been people on this forum that have said the same also.
The preorders for volume 3 exceeded our initial predictions for sales of
this DVD series and not enough finger puppets were printed. For volumes 1 & 2
there were enough finger puppets to cover preorders. Any retailer that
received Tenchi Universe DVD's from the initial production should have
received finger puppets. But for volume 3, the preorders exceeded the number
of finger puppets we printed. There were some DVD's produced in the initial
run that were not packaged with finger puppets.
I would like to comment on volume 4 finger puppets but not all preorders
are in. So I do not have a clear picture of the situation yet.
The finger puppets are a limited promotional item and they all have been
printed in advance. There are no current plans to reprint more.
I am sorry that we can not guarantee that you will receive a set of finger
puppets with your Tenchi Universe DVD purchase. I can only recommend that you
preorder your DVD with your favorite retailer known to have product in stock
by the street date.
Your feedback on this subject is welcome and I hope to have a solution that
is amicable to all.
We sincerely apologize for this inconvenience and thank all our customers
for their continuing support. If there are any future announcements about this
issue, they will be posted here on this forum.
Taku Otsuka
Tenchi Universe DVD Producer (since vol 4)
Pioneer Entertainment (USA) L.P."
As with any promotional item whose sticker says "limited quantities", you
never know if you'll actually get one. Thanks to the Mr. Otsuka for posting
this information.
Press (10:43
AM EST):
A couple of new press releases made their way
to us today. Check out this one
to read about the final volume of Rayearth OVA on VHS and then check
this one out for the details on
the release of Angel Cop on DVD.

Such a tease!
(11:01 PM EST):
Jeffrey Stenzel has sent in a new region 2
review today. And it's a title that a lot of people continually request to see
on DVD here. Check out his thoughts on the recently released
Ah! My Goddess Vol. #1.
More on box sets
(10:05 PM EST):
Over the weekend we received an email from a
reader who got some interesting information from Amazon about Cowboy Bebop.
According to the Amazon rep, the final disc for Cowboy Bebop would have
a box that would hold all of the discs in the series. Suffice to say I put in
an inquiry with the folks at Bandai and got the straight story. This was
something that was kicked around at one time quite awhile ago but never really
got all that far (though I personally think it would be really cool) and no
such thing is planned. My guess is that the rep got a bit confused with the
VHS box sets being released.
Pioneer distribution
(04:17 PM EST):
An interesting post was made in our retail
forum this afternoon about an unnamed online anime store who had this to say
about Pioneer (and thereby Bandai) titles:
"Pioneer Entertainment will be closing down Anime distribution operations
from Sept. 22nd until about October 13th for a much needed order entry and
inventory system upgrade to SAP. During his upgrade, there will be a shipping
blackout on all Pioneer and Bandai Anime titles. In anticipation of this
longer than expected blackout, we have brought in lots of additional stock on
most Pioneer and Bandai titles, but it is inevitable that a few shortages may
occur, so I ask that you bear with us during this period, and assure you that
any titles that may become backordered will ship immediately upon us receiving
restocks after Pioneer begins shipping again in mid-October"
Hardware
(03:02 PM EST):
A new hardware review made its way in today
in the form of the Toshiba
SD-2200 unit. As always, we're looking for more DVD player, receiver and
TV reviews (especially from HDTV folks!).
Alternate angle
(02:38 PM EST):
Staff reviewer Roman Martel has compiled his
latest piece with a focus on
Bubblegum
Crisis 2040 Vol. #1.
Newly reviewed
(10:03 AM EST):
After spending a good portion of yesterday
attending to personal items, we sat down late last night and took in two hours

Gundam Wing: Operation

A note on box sets
(08:06 PM EST):
A couple weeks back, we noticed that
Right Stuf started listing a variety of what looked
like box sets for various titles such as Cowboy Bebop, Blue
Submarine, Trigun and others. We learned recently that these are
packs put together by Right Stuf themselves and not "real" box sets. They're
just bundled sections or an entire series release shipped together.
Digital Omake
(05:07 PM EST):
Almost 2 years after its release, we're still
finding out some hidden extras on some titles. A new one has been submitted
for Tenchi Muyo: Daughter of
Darkness today.
Petitions
(05:04 PM EST):
A slew of new
petitions have been added over
the past couple of days, being capped off with a new one for the big budget
movie Memories. Check 'em out.
It's full of images!
(04:52 PM EST):
Gary over at the
Anime Emporium dropped us a
line today letting us know that they've not reached 1000 images take from
various anime DVD's over the past couple of years. If you're wondering what a
show looks like, this is the place to check out the images.
Fushigilicious
(01:26 PM EST):
The Image Entertainment site updated with
some information about upcoming releases. Of note that I see asked a lot, it
looks as if the second Fushigi Yugi box set will contain the oft
requested music videos and a creditless ending.
Media Blasters tidbits
(12:11 AM EST):
Media Blasters president John Sirabella
posted some interesting information to our forums this morning. While
discussing the Rurouni Kenshin #2 delay and the dates for the next two
volumes, he indicated that Vol. #3 should be very close to its target
date of 10/31. And the only reason that the 11/14 date for Vol. #4 may
slip a bit is because they've decided to add an extra episode to bring that
volume up to 5 episodes. They're looking at getting the Kenshin releases
caught up as soon as they can, so much so that they've apparently recently
invested in a Sonic Solutions system so they can make their DVD masters in
house. It's looking like we should see some really interesting things out of
them in 2001 as they master that new addition to their offices.
Newly reviewed
(12:06 AM EST):
Continuing our streak of Bandai reviews in
the past couple of days, we've got our review up of the highly anticipated
Escaflowne Vol. #1
DVD.
