Newly reviewed
(09:29 PM EST): Also on our completed pile from some late night
watching this week is the 8/14 release from Central Park Media of
Demon Beast
Invasion Vol. #2.
Newly reviewed
(08:18 PM EST): Catching up in the
late night hours this past week, we took in over the course of three nights
the very different episodes that comprise Media Blaster's release of
Tales Trilogy.
Newly reviewed
(06:53 PM EST): Ending out the month
of August, we've got the latest staff review in the form of Central Park
Media's box set of Maze,
the TV series. Check out what Roman thought of this 4 disc box set.
Thursday, August 30th, 2001

Newly reviewed
(08:25 PM EST): Filing this one under our digest review column,
we've struggled to put up a few words about the recent release of
RG Veda. With this
title, I can at least say I finished it whereas I couldn't say that with
Knights of Ramune.
New title announcement
(12:31 PM EST): ADV's at it again
with another title getting a street date. Due on 12/04/2001, Getter Robo Vol.
#4 (of 4) named Salvation will street, bringing the series to a close. Retail
is 29.98$
A favor
(12:06 PM EST): As a favor for a friend, and having dealt with this
in my own life with one of my relatives, I wanted to pass along a site that's
raising money to help someone get a double lung transplant. As often as I find
technology amazing, finding out things like this can be done is even more
amazing. If you have a few free minutes, please check out
http://www.lungsforjill.org/ and
maybe even donate to a worthy cause.
Synch Schedule
(10:43 AM EST): The folks at Synch
Point are making my life a heck of a lot easier. In their recent site revamp
and update, they've added a
production
schedule section that lets you see when things are expected to be out.
Here's hoping they can get that DiGi Charat commercial on some of these discs
as a cute trailer or advert.
ADV on the Rocks
(10:35 AM EST): No no, they're not
going out of business. But we have gotten some nuggets of info on their
upcoming release Sorcerer on the Rocks, which is now showing up on trailers
for the show. While originally titled Chivas 1-2-3 (and changed for obvious
reasons), we're now hearing that this show should hit DVD by the end of the
year. And for those wanting to know who the dub cast will be, Janice Williams
of ADV supplied that info this morning: Shivas Scotch - Jay Hickman; Gin Fizz
- Monica Rial; Kiss - Hilary Haag; Genmi - Brett Weaver; Meru & Teru - Kira;
Millon Dollar - Emily Carter.
New title announcements
(08:48 AM EST): A few new things
have cropped up since yesterday. Cardcaptors Vol. #6 arrives on 11/6 with
another 3 episodes for 24.95$. Also on 11/6 we get Cardcaptor Sakura Vol. #6
which brings another 4 episodes for 29.99$. On 11/27, Manga will release the
120 minute movie version of Shadow Skill for 29.99$.
Wednesday, August 29th, 2001

Newly reviewed
(04:49 PM EST): While I have absolutely zero interest in watching
the dub-only release of
Mobile Suit
Gundam Vol. #1, I don't mind sending it along to Megan Morris to check
out and review. Me, I'll go rewatch the remastered movie releases that came
out subtitled last year in Japan.
Tuesday, August 28th, 2001

Press (09:20 PM
EST): A quick press
release came out today regarding the status of the upcoming edition of
NewType in English as well as some info on the fan community involvement of
this magazine.
Petitions
(04:56 PM EST): The
petitions section has been updated a bit with the addition of Memories and
Tekkaman.
Alternate Angles
(04:52 PM EST): A few more alternate
angle reviews have come in recently, so let's get those out of the way:
New title announcements
(12:15 PM EST): Two new titles as
listed by
Right Stuf today; Saint Tail Vol. #2 and Vampire
Princess Miyu TV Vol. #2 are both due on 10/23/2001. Runtimes are now 100
minutes each (4 episodes) and price remains the same.
Monday, August 27th, 2001

Newly reviewed
(05:24 PM EST): Catching up in my pile of shows to watch as well,
I've finished checking out
Big O Vol. #2 and
have posted my thoughts on this disc.
Newly reviewed
(04:43 PM EST): Staff reviewer Megan
Morris is back again today with her thoughts on Pioneer's recently released
Hand Maid May
Vol. #1 and she should have several more reviews throughout the week.
Sunday, August 26th, 2001

About the reviews
(04:45 PM EST): For those who send in alternate angle reviews on a
regular basis, or those who send in the occasional one, I want to let you know
about a change to our procedures. Previously we had people just emailing them
in after they wrote them and we're double-check them to make sure they fell
within the guidelines and then published them. The person who was checking
them has moved on to bigger and better things, so it's all in my court again.
As such, I've created a new form on the
submissions guideline page for easier formatting on both your part and my
part. This should allow me to scan the reviews more easily and publish them
with more regularity.
Alternate angles
(03:49 PM EST): You want more
opinions? We got more opinions. Check out these 28 new reviews
added today:
Region 1
Region 2
Region 4
Newly reviewed
(09:19 AM EST): Helping us out with
a title that I just know we're never going to get around to due to its lack of
being subtitled, Giaourus Ericus has sent in a detailed essay/review on
Urotsukidoji IV:
Inferno Road, a disc that sounds like it could have been quite
interesting.
Saturday, August 25th, 2001

Newly reviewed
(10:43 PM EST): Our last review for Saturday is TOKYOPOP's other
new release due out this Tuesday, the very cute and smile-inducing
Saint Tail Vol. #1.
Newly reviewed
(06:17 PM EST): A little bit of
quiet time today let us take in Media Blasters latest offering in their Kitty
line, The Affairs,
a compilation of Office Affairs and Co-Ed Affairs.
Newly reviewed
(05:46 PM EST): Adding another one
to the completed pile today, we've finished watching the latest entry in the
Kyoto arc with
Rurouni Kenshin
TV Vol. #9: Heart of the Sword.
Newly reviewed
(12:15 PM EST): After taking a rare
day of rest (hence no updates yesterday) we're back today with a review of
Vampire Princess Miyu TV Vol. #1, the first TV series to be released
by new entry TOKYOPOP.
Thursday, August 23rd, 2001

New dueling reviews
(11:36 PM EST): With it's four hour
running time, and my ability to generally only watch an hour of anime a night,
it took four days for us to completely check out this box sets. But tonight
we've compiled our thoughts on Pioneer's recent release of
El-Hazard: The
Magnificent World OVA Box Set and to bring another point of view to
it, Roman Martel has sent in
his review
as well.
New UK titles
(05:27 PM EST): A couple of new
things have been mentioned today from UK distributor MVM. Riding Bean will
street on 10/08/2001 for £17.99 and Urusei Yatsura Movie 1 will street on
11/05/2001 for £14.99. Thanks to Ali for the tip.
Newly reviewed
(04:53 PM EST): Checking back in
today, Megan has sent in her next review, this time on the double disc set of
13 episodes of
Metal Fighter
Miku released by Media Blasters on 7/31.
Catalog Check Update
(10:55 AM EST): After a serious kick
to our rear by Mariela of the Licensing List,
we've updated a couple of sections of our
Catalog Check area to include
new things learned during the convention season and recent announcements.
Pioneer and Media Blasters continue to lead the way in getting their back
catalog out (especially since we don't include MB's Kitty titles) with
everyone else at varying levels depending on their catalog size.
Nicely priced
(10:16 AM EST): Some little bits of
information have come out regarding the Ranma 1/2 box set, with the first one
being called Ranma 1/2 Digital Dojo. While the number of discs wasn't listed,
it does say that it contains the content of the first 9 VHS volumes
(presumably the 2 episode dub tapes) as well as a bonus music video. This 18
episode box set will list for 99.98$ for the 450 minute running time.
Title delays
(09:28 AM EST): It's not too
surprising as Viz had really set themselves up a rather ambitious schedule,
but there's been one snag and a set of pushbacks for their release of Ceres,
Celestial Legend. The new dates, which list for the entire series, are as
follows:
Ceres, Celestial Legend 4: Resolve - 11/13/01
Ceres, Celestial Legend 5: The Progenitor - 12/11/01
Ceres, Celestial Legend 6: Double - 1/22/02
Ceres, Celestial Legend 7: Requiem - 2/26/02
Ceres, Celestial Legend 8: Denouement - 3/26/02
Help Right Stuf!
(09:05 AM EST): Translator Neil
Nadelman posted this to the rec.arts.anime.misc newsgroup late last night, and
knowing the broadness of our readership here, let's see if we can help out:
"Right Stuf International will soon be releasing Boogiepop Phantom on DVD
and they'd like to include the info on the liner notes released with the
Japanese DVDs. The trouble is that they can't find a copy of vol. 1 anywhere
and the schedule's getting close to crunch time. Does anyone out there have a
copy of the Japanese DVD of vol. 1 of Boogiepop? If so, could you photocopy or
scan the liner notes and send them to me ASAP?"
If you do have these materials, please post on our Studio Feedback forum as
I don't want to post Mr. Nadelman's email here for the harvesters.
Wednesday, August 22nd, 2001

Newly reviewed
(06:37 PM EST): Also on the newly reviewed pile this evening from
the staff reviewers is
Votoms, Armored Trooper
Vol. #1 by Roman Martel. If you're into Gasaraki, you'll want to check
out this review.
Almost released
(05:54 PM EST): According to a very
shocked Robert Woodhead of AnimEigo, "I have some shocking and disturbing news
for you. The UY TV 11-15 DVD Box Set will be shipping sometime around
September 6th. Yes, I know, it's hard to believe. AnimEigo is actually getting
a box set out ahead of schedule. We can't believe it either!" Robert also
indicated that there is room for a few extra last minute orders, so hit their
site (link to the right and top) if you want to get more Urusei Yatsura TV
goodness.
Newly reviewed
(05:47 PM EST): Megan's on the scene
again today with a full review of the NuTech sublicense of
GoShogun, the Time Etranger
that they got from Central Park Media.
Who are you?
(02:50 PM EST): With the two biggest
conventions out of the way for this year, we're scratching our heads wondering
why more of our regulars who attended these conventions haven't sent their
picture in to our Forum
Gallery. This is your official kick in the pants to get social along with
the rest of us.
Tuesday, August 21st, 2001

AnimEigo updates
(06:44 PM EST): The AnimEigo site updated this week with the
standings of various titles that are in production. Urusei Yatsura TV Box #3
is done! It's been sent to the replicator. Vampire Princess Miyu OVA #2 is
also expected to be finished by the end of August. Replication early in
September. Oh My Goddess #2 is in final stages of authoring. They expect this
to be completed at the end of August, release sometime mid-September. Macross
- Menu design is nearly complete. First disc is nearly ready for testing.
Video for the first 12 episodes have been re-mastered. In replication in
September, release late September. Baoh is still delayed due to difficulties
with authoring house. Bubblegum Crash's menu design has begun. Subtitle work
is in progress. Targeting for completion in October, replication and release
in late October/early November.
New title announcements
(06:39 PM EST): The gang at
Right Stuf have several new listings up this afternoon. The Ah! My Goddess
the Motion Picture streets on 11/27/2001 for 29.99$ with no features listed
yet (and here's hoping for an early screener! The R2 DTS is tempting me
again). On 12/11/2001, El Hazard: The Wanders TV Series Vol. 3 arrives bearing
another 6 episodes of this series as well as El Hazard: The Wanders TV Series
Vol. 4 which contains the final 7 episodes. Both are priced at 29.99$. Also on
12/11/2001 we have Hand Maid May 3: Memory Failure which brings the series to
a close with 4 episodes at 29.99$ and Niea Under 7 Vol. #3 arrives on this day
as well, bearing another 3 episodes for 29.99$.
AoD goes to the Big Apple
(06:32 PM EST): Expanding our
convention going this year, we (meaning me, my wife and Amethyst) will be
attending the Big Apple Anime Festival this coming Halloween weekend. I'll be
hosting the Anime DVD Shootout, which currently has an
online
poll so we can give out awards to the studios for a job well done. The
folks at BAAF are also talking about
Virgin Megastore coming on
board and the guests that are newly announced,
Rin Taro and Katsuhiro Otomo!
Manga & Evangelion
(10:35 AM EST): According to
posts
this morning on Manga's forum, Keith Burgess has denied the report we
received yesterday regarding comments on overlays appearing on the Evangelion
movies. It also looks like the date has changed again, with the VHS being
released in January and the DVD's being released in March of 2002.
Monday, August 20th, 2001

Digital Omake
(08:11 PM EST): A few new pieces have been added this evening for
Angel Sanctuary and Hand Maid May Vol. #1 to our
Digital Omake section.
Advance reviews
(08:04 PM EST): Though we had a busy
weekend visiting the emergency room a few times, when we weren't there we
spent the time watching Blue Seed! So today, we have a review of the 9/18
release of Blue
Seed Vol. #3 and a review of the 10/2 release of
Blue Seed Vol. #4,
which brings the series to its big conclusion. We'll likely have more reviews
towards the end of the week such as Rurouni Kenshin Vol. #9 and a slew of
alternate angle reviews.
Manga report
(06:47 PM EST): Forum regular "lejun"
attending this past weekends Wizard World in Chicago and came back with this
brief but enlightening report about Manga Enterainment:
"One thing I had a chance to do was speak with Keith Burgess from Manga
Entertainment.
Please excuse me if some of this info is known already. it's news to me I am
also not stating anything as fact. I am only relaying the info from Keith's
mouth.
I asked once again if they have plans to do a re-master on Wings of
Honneamise. He stated that he would very much like to but the reason that they
probably won't as of now is that they will be losing the license soon (IIRC he
said March 2002). He is not sure if they will be renewing it.
Evangelion movies:
2-disc set
Dub is completed.
Sub is being properly timed.
The full "red Cross Book" will not be included as an extra. A lot of it will
though. Including other extras that they will produce. He said that the Red
Cross Book was written by many different people besides Gainax and they
could't license the whole thing.
And now for the bad news. Aside from the Macrovision that the movies will
(mostly likely) contain of course. The movies WILL HAVE overlay's.

More Lupin? (06:35
PM EST): Regularly demanded by the older segment of fandom, it
appears that there may be more Lupin III on the way to US shores. According to
this article on
figures.com, "This is an exciting time at FUNimation with a new toy
company and numerous great new animated series under their belt, including the
announcement of Lupin, of which IF has just acquired the rights to (the last
10 movies), and Dragon Ball GT". With more recent Funimation discs sounding
like they're coming out better, and Blue Gender being the real test among the
anime community, this could potentially be a very sweet bit of news. More
Lupin is a good thing.
No new Bebop
(08:30 AM EST): During Otakon, there
was a panel with Mr. Kawamoto of Cowboy Bebop fame, who had been asked some
questions about the continuing of the Bebop show and shared universe.
Unfortunately, as we've come to learn, Mr. Kawamoto has read the thread here
that lists the information from that panel. According to the email I've
received regarding it, "Mr. Kawamoto has seen this website and claims this is
false information (I did not attend his panel, so I can't say for sure).
Perhaps this person misinterpreted what was said, or maybe the translator
inaccurately spoke. Either way, I was told to have this thread corrected by
Mr. Kawamoto."
The thread
in question talks about how this new series would be in the same universe as
Cowboy Bebop but with new characters. Apparently this was really
misinterpreted during the panel, as it appears Mr. Kawamoto was rather simply
talking about a new series where a number of the Bebop staff is working
together again as opposed to a new continuing series.
Our apologies to Mr. Kawamoto for the erroneous report.
Saturday, August 18th, 2001

Newly reviewed
(01:23 PM EST): Proving to be a real surprise treat, we've compiled
our thoughts on TRSI's latest release, the
Irresponsible Captain Tylor OVA Vol. #1.
Advance review
(12:30 AM EST): Due out on
10/09/2001,
Sorcerer
Hunters Vol. #4 brings this episodic fantasy series to a close with a
fair amount of finality and open-endedness. Now we're primed to see some
Sorcerer on the Rocks....
Friday, August 17th, 2001

New title announcements
(06:44 PM EST): Following up on an
earlier mention, the street date for Gasaraki Vol. #7 has been set for
11/27/01, with three episodes for 29.99$. Check out the sweet cover art
here.
New title announcements
(11:43 AM EST): According to a new
post this morning, Robotech volume 7 & 8 and the fourth boxset have been
assigned a street date of 10/30/01. This is the first of the Robotech Masters
(Southern Cross) episodes. Each volume contains 6 eps and the boxset includes
a disc of extras. And there are hints of at least one more new title
announcement from ADV today.
Thursday, August 16th, 2001

Newly reviewed
(11:17 PM EST): Due out on 08/21/2001 from ADV Films, we've spent
the evening taking in the wonderful
New
Kimagure Orange Road: Summer's Beginning movie. AnimEigo needs to get
the series, OVA's and movies out yesterday.
Advance review
(02:42 PM EST): Due out on
09/25/2001, we've taken a gander through
Nadia Vol. #3
from ADV Films.
Disc delays
(10:14 AM EST): Hakkenden, The: Legend of the Dog Warriors has been
delayed to a 10/09/2001 release date (features remain the same) while Crest of
the Stars Vol. #4 has been bumped back to a 12/04/2001 release date.
Newly reviewed
(10:12 AM EST): Trying to catch up
from the downtime we took for the convention, we're slowly getting back into
the swing of things with our latest review of Pioneer's 8/14 release of
NieA_7 Vol. #1.
New title announcements
(09:12 AM EST): Making sure that my
wallet simply can't keep up, there are a couple of new Pioneer announcements
this morning courtesy of the Right Stuf listings. Gatekeepers Vol. 2 will
arrive on 11/13/2001 with 3 more episodes for 29.95$. To balance out the low
episode count there, Pioneer will release El Hazard: The Wanders TV Series
Vol. 1 containing 7 episodes and El Hazard: The Wanders TV Series Vol. 2
containing 6 episodes for 29.99$ each. Oddly, those two do not have a date
listed with them, but I'd expect them to be released in a November/December
timeframe. These two discs make up the first half of the Wanderer's TV series,
which means this is the first Pioneer release of a 4 disc set for a 26 episode
series. Strangely enough, I've got the entire series on laserdisc (including
the rare volume and the box) but never got around to watching it.
Wednesday, August 15th, 2001

New cover art
(06:58 PM EST): Three new pieces have been added to
gallery 4, with
Gasaraki 7, Gasaraki 8 and Oh! My Goddess Vol. #2.
New polls
(06:45 PM EST): There are two
new polls up this
evening that I hope many of you take a moment or two to fill out. The
first one is a multiple
question poll with questions supplied by the folks at Central Park Media. The
second poll is one that
I've written up to see what kind of interest level there is in a special
Spriggan Collectors Edition DTS release.
New title announcement
(10:51 AM EST): After announcing two
new street dates yesterday, ADV is on a roll again today giving us an
11/06/2001 date for Nadia Vol. #4, which will contain another four episodes
for 29.98$.
Tuesday, August 14th, 2001

Con report (09:57
PM EST): Adding more nuggets of good information from Otakon, our
very own Mariela Ortiz has written up
her
convention report and sent it in this evening.
Site note
(06:23 PM EST): Please note that we've been informed that Suncoast
and its various online incarnations will be offline from the 15th to the 20th
of this month. We've been requested to remove our links to them during this
time.
New title announcement
(06:21 PM EST): Working hard to keep
me working, ADV Films has also announced a 10/23/2001 release date for
Original Dirty Pair 2 : Damsels in Distress. This is the concluding volume for
the OVA series, bringing in another 5 OVA's on one nicely dual layered disc
for 29.95$.
Press (06:19
PM EST): The Right Stuf folks are hard at things as well, with
their new press release talking
about Boogiepop Phantom Vol. #2!
New title announcement
(06:13 PM EST): Not one to slow
down, ADV Films has set a 10/23/2001 release date for Getter Robo Vol. #3,
which will likely contain 3 episodes in bilingual format for 29.95$.
Press (06:11
PM EST): The folks at Manga have sent out their latest
press release, this time for the
9/25 release of "X". Since it's going to come up on the forums, yes, it
appears that the two things missing from this release is an anamorphic
transfer (the press release simply lists letterbox) and the Japanese 5.1
track, which presumably was unattainable.
Monday, August 13th, 2001

Health warning
(06:11 PM EST): No, this isn't another Pokeseizure episode. For
those who attended the Otakon convention and were wondering why all the
streets got blocked off on Saturday (which caused many many problems), Dave
Spracklen mentioned why in an email related to how the con went:
"At about 5:15am there was an underground drainage explosion
when some tripropylene which had collected was set off by some spark. The
manhole covers blew 4 feet into the air and some cones were melted. (they had
just been set up after people had reported vapors in the area) If you
experiences lung problems, allergy symptoms, or your skin was breaking out or
pink on Saturday and Sunday, that's why. Tripropylene is an irritant to
skin/eyes/lungs."
I didn't bring it up in the con report, since it wasn't the con's fault. Of
course, it did affect the convention and my own enjoyment level of it as it
disrupted some plans I had, but that falls under act of god.
New poll
(02:29 PM EST): With some preliminary information given out
yesterday from Synch Point and the FLCL covers, we're running
a little poll to
see what YOU think should be done.
New title announcements
(01:35 PM EST): The
Right Stuf site has updated several title dates
today. Robotech Masters DVD Box 1 is due on 10/30/2001, which will contain
both Vol. #1 and Vol. #2 from the Masters series as well as disc of extras for
44.95 (14.95$ for the two singles). The Trigun box set gets an 11/20 release
date with a price of 199.98$, a 40$ savings over buying the discs individually
for retail price. Sailor Moon S TV Series Vol. #6: Small Hearts/Awakening
arrives on 11/27 with 165 minutes of Sailor Moon goodness.
Advance review (01:27 PM EST):
Listed for a 9/4 release (and showing up at some retailers now) is Bandai's
release of
Crest of the
Stars Vol. #2, a release that takes every problem with the first
volume and fixes it.
New extra (12:29 PM EST):
Much like they recently did with the voice actress for Nadia, ADV is again
doing a Q&A session with the voice actor for Jean from the series Nadia. A new
thread for questions has been posted, which you can participate in
here.
New in... Holland? (10:56 AM EST):

help make the Dutch happy as they start to get more homegrown releases:

Con report (10:53 AM EST):
We've written up our thoughts on
Otakon
2001 this morning. There are also a few other reports cropping up in the
Conventions forum of the site worth checking out that go into detail about
some non-DVD related things, such as a new series set in the Cowboy Bebop
universe with new characters.
Con update (09:27 AM EST):
We're finally back home and starting to settle into things here. First up, I'd
like to plug and push the excellent work done by site photographer Riki
LeCotey during Otakon. Due to bandwidth concerns, I've got the pics posted
elsewhere, so you can see the first album
here and the second album
here. To login, use "chris@animeondvd.com"
as the name or search under the nickname of "animeondvd". No password is
required.

Media Blasters update (06:29 PM EST):
The gang at
AnimeNation have scored a look into the November
release plans from Media Blasters. Here's what's happening:
Yasuomi Umetsu's follow-up (but not sequel) to Kite, the two episode long
OAV series Mezzo Forte, will debut in the US in four different editions. Mezzo
Forte will be released on 55 minute long dubbed VHS for $19.95 and bilingual
55 minute long DVD for $24.95, as well as 60 minute long uncut adults only
versions on dubbed VHS and bilingual DVD retailing for $24.95 and $29.95
respectively. Supplemental DVD features have yet to be determined, but Media
Blasters is hoping to be able to include staff interviews and an audio
commentary track.
The Fortune Quest L TV series will debut on bilingual DVD, featuring 5
episodes. The 26 episode Fortune Quest L TV series from 1997 is a parody of
traditional swords & sorcery role playing games.
The 50 minute long Tokyo Project action OAV will premier on dubbed VHS for
$19.95 and bilingual DVD for $24.95. Other genre releases scheduled for
November 13th include Rurouni Kenshin TV series volume 14 and Maho Tsukai Tai
volume 5 (TV series volume 2).
Newly reviewed (01:18 PM EST):
Adding our last new review until sometime later next week, we've compiled our
thoughts on this weeks release from Bandai,
Angel Links Vol. #3.
More on Ceres (07:39 AM EST):
The
Right Stuf site updated yesterday with details on
some of the upcoming Ceres, Celestial Warrior releases. As expected, the discs
are continuing their monthly release schedule. 9/25 will see
Ceres, Celestial Legend 3,
which will have such extras as artwork and an exclusive Yu Watase interview.
On 10/16, Ceres,
Celestial Legend 4 will have the Japanese DVD commercial footage and some
line art. Finally, on 11/13,
Ceres, Celestial Legend 5,
we'll at last get the clean opening and ending and more line art.
New site (07:25 AM EST):
The site is now open for the Utena
Movie, and it's quite nicely done and has a lot of interesting things on
it. Of particular note is the winners and honorable mentions for the fan art
and cosplay contests. I noticed at least a couple of familiar names of people
who frequent here, so congrats to them and congrats to everyone who won!

Newly reviewed (10:05 PM EST):
Squeezing in a new review while packing for Otakon this Thursday, we've got
our thoughts on the newly released
Ceres, Celestial Legend
Vol. #1 compiled and posted.

New title announcement (09:17 PM EST):
Adding yet another disc to their October slate, ADV has announced that
Princess Nine Vol. #1 will street on 10/23/2001. This disc will contain 5
bilingual episodes and retail for 19.98$. Can you pass that up?
New title announcements (04:35 PM
EST): The folks at ADV have let loose with two new release
dates today. Arc the Lad Vol. #5 has a street date of 10/16/01 with 5 episodes
on the disc. Generator Gawl Vol. #4 now has a 10/09/01 street date, bringing
this series to a conclusion.
Berserk tidbits (09:10 AM EST):
A few nuggets of information have surfaced this morning regarding Media
Blaster's release of the series Berserk. From what we can tell, they're
shooting to start releasing the series in February and as single discs. Discs
should run 5 episodes each. And to allay the continual fears that I get in
emails and see in forum posts, there will be no editing of this series. I
personally cannot wait to get this series.

Otakon tidbits (10:01 PM EST):
This coming weekend is the Otakon convention, which means from Thursday
through early Monday, we'll either be on the road or be at the convention. As
such, expect no updates. I doubt I'll go through the effort I did last year,
as I expect most of the announcements have been made at Anime Expo. If there
is news, there are a bunch of locals who are sure to post to the convention
forum as well as to the chat. And why not stop by the chat while we're all
gone, so the folks in California and the UK don't feel quite as lonely without
all of us east coast fans?
We'll still be posting a post-convention report come next week, hopefully
with plenty of pictures and some interesting stories to tell. For those of you
attending, we've learned what the panel schedule will be like (which is why I
go to these things, to go to the panels. I'd much rather watch my anime at
home. Cons are for panels and hanging out with friends!):
FRIDAY
12 p.m. ADV, Panel 2
1 p.m. Bandai, Panel 3
2 p.m. Studio Ironcat, Panel 3
SATURDAY
10 a.m. Right Stuf, Panel 1
10 a.m. Synch Point, Panel 2
11 a.m. AnimEigo, Panel 1
SUNDAY
10 a.m. Central Park Media
12 p.m. Viz
2 p.m. Media Blasters
I personally should be to most of the Friday and Saturday panels, but I
have to wonder what was being thought in scheduling panels on Sunday for the
studios and for putting Media Blasters at 2 PM? John, I'd love to come and
shoot the breeze with you at the panel, but some of us have a nice 8 hour
drive back, and many people have flights. Maybe next year. Scheduling studio
panels on Friday at noon isn't much better, what with most people not arriving
until late afternoon or just coming Saturday. So far, last years panel set up
(almost 8 hours worth in a row) is looking much better. Ah well, can't win
them all.
If you see us there, feel free to say hi! And according to various reports
from locals, the damage from the train problem last week is mostly cleared up
and all streets are again open to the public.
Newly reviewed (03:41 PM EST):
One of the most charming and heartwarming series I've seen in recent memory,
we've compiled our thoughts on the recent release of
Boys Be... from Odex in
Singapore. Before anyone goes off jumping on us about it being a bootleg,
we've gotten confirmation from Pioneer directly that Pioneer Japan has
licensed this title (and several others) to Odex for DVD production, so it's
not a bootleg. We make every effort to ensure reviews of bootlegs and pirated
material are not published on this site. For those of you looking to score a
set, we got ours from
Popular,
and you'll want to use our preferred currency
converter to figure out how much it'll cost to get to where you live.
Newly reviewed (11:24 AM EST):
Also just in recently is the 7/24 release from Artizical, the light yaoi
experience that's known as
Kizuna. This one
practically flew under our radar!
Newly reviewed (10:46 AM EST):
Just released this past week, we got in our copy of Media Blasters latest OVA
series release in the form of
Jungle de Ikou.
Newly reviewed (09:36 AM EST):
Catching up a bit more on what little we have to watch, our review for Central
Park Media's June 12th release of
Fencer of
Minerva Vol. #1 has been added to our library.

Best wishes! (05:35 PM EST):
Posted to the Right Stuf's main page this afternoon was a note that company
president (and frequent forum lurker) Shawne Kleckner went in Tuesday night
for an emergency appendectomy. Here's to a quick and
speedy recovery! Get better soon!
Film festival (10:18 AM EST):
The Fantasia film festival happened and Paul Rouleau has sent in a great
detailed look at the various new anime movies that played there.
Alternate angles (09:19 AM EST):
Let's see how many we can get through this time around... I do want to make
one comment though, to whichever company ends up licensing the Mospeada
series: please please please use the region 2 covers. Not only do they look
fantastic, but they have both English and Japanese logos on them already.

Region 2
Region 4

Newly reviewed H (10:52 PM EST):
Cleaning out our review pile even further, we've completed our review of
Central Park Media's release of the second OVA series,
Lady Blue.
Kent... Mr. Kent (10:04 PM EST):
Chat regulars know his name well and he's posted on our forums as well. But if
you buy any ADV DVD in the past several months, you'll almost always see his
name at the very bottom of the credits. Andy Kent of ADV and ADV in general
are highlighted in this rather
positive newspaper article about the company and anime in general.
Utena movie (10:01 PM EST):
A new wrinkle of information has appeared regarding the upcoming limited
edition version of the Utena movie that we talked about recently. According to
information from Central Park Media, this disc will be solicited to retailers
as a separate item from the original movie disc listing. This means you
can order it specifically and practically count on it being sent to you. CPM
has indicated that retailers will be told when there are no more to be
ordered, so much like the Akira SE LE, some retailers will be good enough to
list it as being all presold and won't take more orders for it.
Newly reviewed (09:59 PM EST):
Double your pleasure and double your fun, as there was recently a double dose
of Gundam Wing released, bringing the series one disc shy of completion. Our
reviews for Gundam
Wing Vol. #8 and
Gundam Wing Vol. #9
are now online.
Contests completed! (01:37 PM EST):
All seven of our
July contests have ended, and it's been an amazing month for entries. The
Trigun contest generated over 3000 entries, and combined, the five Akira
contests brought us well over 12,000 entries. Now you know why I've been
behind on email! We'll be sending of notices and prizes today for all of the
contests, so expect to hear from us soon if you won. If not, there's always
next time, as we've still got close to 100 discs to give away!
Now replicating (11:08 AM EST):
According to a newly updated main page at
AnimEigo, Urusei Yatsura TV Box Set 3 is
now in replication and they expect an end of August shipment from their
offices for it. Time to pay off a few more bits of my credit card I think!

Newly reviewed (09:03 PM EST):
Whoops... without realizing it, I had
completely forgotten up until lat week that we even had our copy of
Sailor Moon S
TV Vol. #3. Now that we've gotten most of our box sets out of the way,
we're starting to catch up on other titles like this one, which is now added
to our review library.
UK Mononoke (05:50 PM EST):
Well, it looks like the UK release of
Princess Mononoke is going to be rather sweet for fans over there. Here's what
the folks at Anime Digital sent
us: "Eleven feature length films and one short will play during Studio Ghibli:
The Art of Japanese Animation. To coincide with this complete retrospective,
Princess Mononoke will be released by Buena Vista Home Entertainment on Monday
22 October on VHS and a limited edition DVD Box Set which will include Helen
McCarthy's definitive book "Hayao Miyazaki, Master of Japanese Animation" -
Helen McCarthy's book will also be on sale in the cinema foyer throughout the
season."
TOKYOPOP tidbit (05:41
PM EST): The
folks at
AnimeNation forwarded us this potentially tasty bit
of news this afternoon:
A representative of TOKYOPOP has informed us that the first DVD volume of
St. Tail will be released as a single DVD for $29.98 and also as a boxed set
that includes the DVD and a copy of the first St. Tail manga graphic novel
(which normally retails for $9.99) for a retail price of only 1 cent more,
$29.99.
Also, in checking out the
TOKYOPOP site, the Saint Tail section says: "The first DVD volume will
contain three episodes with additional four-episode volumes to follow every
other month. It will also be released in dubbed, three episode VHS volumes
every other month. And to celebrate her arrival in America, TOKYOPOP will be
offering a limited edition box set featuring the first volume of the ANIME and
MANGA in August!"
The slipcase is designed for just this disc and the graphic
novel, and not like many region 2 releases where the box is made to hold
multiple DVD's. Maybe in the future?
Divi-Chan (12:47 PM
EST): It's been
quite awhile, but Divi-Chan has submitted
her first article in a
potential series that she may do, depending on the
feedback she gets.
