Divi-Chan
Takes on the Studios!
A look at Studio Feedback and
Suggestions
Every so often, Divi-Chan takes a peek into the Studio Feedback and
Suggestions forum on the Anime on DVD site and will report back here for
general consumption some of the latest bits of interesting news, rumors
and hilarity that ensues in these threads. While not all aspects of the
Feedback forum will be covered, some of the highlights may help bring some
secondary issues to the foreground.

You can't put that on a single
layer!
After it was discovered
that the 3rd volume of Arc the Lad had 5 episodes on a single layer,
there was much ado about it. As was learned not longer afterwards, ADV
had volumes 3 and 4 done by different authoring houses in an effort to
see which places are up to the task of handling their material,
especially with the number of releases that are in the pipeline. David
Williams of ADV explains:
"Why is this disc a DVD-5? Volume 3 and 4 were given to two new
icehouses as tryouts and for various reasons volume 3 was encoded on
a 5 instead of a 9. By the time I learned of it, it was about
wrapped up. We then had to decide if we should eat the cost and have
a new one made or go with it. Given the short run time of the video
and after I played the disc in several setups, I felt it was
acceptable. Later volumes are being produced by the same icehouse
that did volume 4 which also uses a similar setup as was used for
the first 2 discs. Otherwise, as policy, 5 eps discs will always be
on a DVD-9."
With the recent release
of the 2nd Urusei Yatsura box set, those who have the highly
anticipated Macross box set on order are feeling a tad nervous. It's
not the contents themselves, but the packaging. The box sets for
Urusei Yatsura so far have fit very snugly within the boxes that are
used, but that means no protective wrap around them. With Macross
being a bigger set, we're betting that there'll be some protection for
it, but even then, as illustrated in this thread, Suncoast packages
well and people end up with scratched covers anyway. Is there a
win/win situation? Click

Any word on new Dog of Flanders
Back during Pioneer's
early ramp up days of releasing anime discs, one of their less talked
about releases was the Dog of Flanders movie. Two versions were
produced for VHS, the full length subtitled release and a dub release
that was cut by about 20 minutes to make this children's movie more
palatable to U.S. audiences. DVD fans got the short end of the stick
by getting only the dub cut version, and there was word that many
inside Pioneer considered this release to be a series of poor
decisions. Is it time to release a new version, as requested by
readers here? Divi thinks so.

ADV Peeps: something that's been
overlooked
As always, people want
to know what's up with the back catalog. This time around the
clamoring is for the classic Devil Hunter Yohko from ADV. Astute
readers will remember that a poll was done awhile ago on the site,
asking what people wanted most from ADV's back catalog. While the cute
Yohko did rank high, she didn't make the top 5 and came in at number 6
instead. But according to David Williams, "Hang in there, we haven't
forgotten it." Of particular interest is in how the release will be
handled, as the first episode was done in two different versions.
William G. illustrates:
"The Japanese language version which runs about 45 minutes than
there is the dubbed version which contains extra footage of animation
and runs about 50 minutes. I don't know how DLW plans to handle the
different versions of the first episode, but both versions will be on
the first disc."
Reader Bonedaddy69
brings up a regular question in asking why CPM bothers doing double
sided covers if they don't bother using clear cases, as has been
happening often lately. Justin Sevakis of CPM posted about this within
the last month or two, indicating that part of the problem is the
transition to a new replicator who apparently didn't keep enough of
these things in stock. For those in need, Divi heartily recommends the
gang over at www.inetdvd.com for
all your keepcase needs. These folks simply rule. Of course, Divi
would also recommend that CPM spend a few extra pennies and drop the
clears and move to join the rest of the industry in providing inserts
instead.

ADV - How about more
of this
Regular forum poster
KaOTiki posted a link to a simply great poster over at Right Stuf
that's available for the Gasaraki series. Mmm, Yushiro's got that
whole quiet introverted cool guy thing going! Anyway, the basic
question is why don't wee see more of these things? Recent indications
from a variety of studio representatives has indicated that the
Japanese licensors are beginning to be more flexible on items like
this, seeing the US market as becoming even more of a cash cow now
that the number of buying fans continues to increase and anime shows
get even more airtime on the networks. Here's hoping Media Blasters
releases some really hot posters of the Weiss Kruez boys for me...
