Player Modification Info
You asked for it and you got it! This list probably isn't as comprehensive
as I would like, but I found as much info as I could, and now I'm sharing it
with you. :-) I've simply listed the sites with mod information, as opposed to
trying to explain how to do the mod. I figured I'd leave that to the people
who have actually done a mod for themselves. The mod sites are listed by
manufacturer, and then by model number. At the end of the article are several
sites that have either general information, or information about more than one
player.
I also have to give the biggest thank you ever to Chunglee76 for supplying
a bunch of links for me to check out. :-)
Disclaimers: Since I don't have a standalone
player, I have not road-tested any of the mods that are listed below. And I
wouldn't dare try to modify the Wanderer's DVD-ROM. These are simply the sites
that I found that provided the most (and what looked to be the most accurate
and easiest to use) information.
I would also advise against soldering (unless you really, really know what
you're doing). If you do decide to try this, there is the distinct possibility
that you will ruin the player.
And, of course, the final disclaimer. On most players, cracking the case
open and modifying anything nullifies the warranty. Basically, I guess I'm
saying that you should think long and hard before you decide to do anything to
your player.
Players
Pioneer
Here are some mods for several models of Pioneer players.

Sony
This site has information solely about modding Sony players.

Philips Magnavox
No specific sites dedicated to the Philips Magnavox. Millions of apologies to
Fam-Fan. I can't find anything at all about your player. Gomen nasai!
Panasonic
Several different Panasonic mods.

JVC
For all who have a JVC player, Aokakesu submits this
helpful information for modifying your player.
DVD-ROMs
This site has downloads available for DVD-ROMs.
http://www.dvdtidbits.com/downloads/hp1_7w1.exe
This is for those of you who have Windows 98. It's got step by step
instructions on how to get into regedit and tweak the settings. I would advise
reading all the warnings that come before he actually gets into the modding
part to make sure you don't delete something vital.
http://www.fourmilab.ch/documents/dvdregion/
This has mods for Creative Encore DVD-ROM players.
http://www.visualdomain.net/
Here's the DVD-ROM version of region hacks.

For those of you who have a Hollywood plus card,
here's some info from Wuss912.
Miscellaneous Sites-these are the sites that
have multiple players or general information.
This should be the first site you check if you can't find what you want on
any of the other sites. This site has a wealth of information about
standalones and DVD-ROMs alike. It also has information about whether of not
the mod chip will work on your particular player. Click on the file icon, and
check to see if yours is there. I have to mention that the site is primarily
in German. However, it has been translated to English (including the Do it
Yourself section), so as long as you have Acrobat Reader, you're all set.

It's all in the name: region hacks.
http://www2.datatestlab.com/regionhacks/_disc1/tocproto.htm
These guys are based out of Stockholm, and their chips do require
soldering.
http://www.dvdirect.net/modification.htm
Based out of the Netherlands, these guys have the mod chips for all kinds
of players.
http://www.moddevice.com/
This is a pretty cool site. No soldering, what else can I say? For $100 you
get the mod chip, instructions, and a one year guarantee. Cheaper than a new
player, at any rate.
http://www.dvdchip.com/
This is a site based out of Germany. They've got mods for a few Sony and
Pioneer players.
http://www.megavision.de/mv_cf_diy.htm
Here's another site. It's got what they call a MultiMod, which can modify
several players. It's also got a couple of manufacturer specific mods. It's
based out of England (doesn't mention if they can only do region 2 stuff,
though, or if they could also mod region 1 players), and you can send your
player to them if you don't want to do the mod yourself (the mod does require
soldering). Just keep in mind that sending your player to them, if you're in
North America, Could be a little more than you're willing to spend on a mod.
The one thing that I couldn't find was a pricing guide. Maybe you'll have
better luck. :-)
http://www.techtronics.com/ttn/shop/510-multimod.html
This site has a few mods listed. It's still mainly under construction.
http://www.electronicsdirect.com/modification.htm
And here's the mother of all sites. You pick your player and make your mod!
Gotta love that. Well, OK, not all players are listed there. But they do have
35 different players listed. Basically, it's a site where you can buy chip
that mods the player. The site's based out of Holland, so I don't know if that
would affect anyone who's ordering from the States or Canada.

Site Update! The above mentioned site has been road tested by a site
regular. Click here for his comments on the site.
Codefree Players This is for those of you who
either have not yet bought a DVD player, and are looking for a codefree one,
or if you've already got one and need/want to buy a new one.
If you have no idea what kind of player you want to get, try this site:
www.dvdbuyingguide.com . There's
reviews, comparison charts, and all kinds of info to get you started on the
road to buying a DVD player.
Here's a place to try, dvdcity.com. I'm not putting the link in here,
'cause I want you to go through the site. :-) They're an affiliate (plug,
plug).
OK. This site primarily sells codefree players. If you're still shopping
around for a player, this is the place to go for a codefree player. Here's the
address for their homepage:
http://www.codefree.com
Now, if all else fails, and you still can't find what you're looking for on
one of the above sites, follow this link below. It's a message board where you
can post what kind of player you have, and maybe someone who's far more
knowledgeable than a mere catgirl like me could find/suggest a mod or hack for
you.
http://www.dvdhunt.com/hardware/
I hope this information helps you guys in your quest for codefree-ness. If
anyone knows of other sites that are good that I've missed, feel free to email
me with the info, and I'll put it up in subsequent columns. :-)
