Here I am, still full from my incredible Japanese birthday dinner. Damn, now that I mentioned it, I want more tempura. (sigh) And plum wine. Damn. I’ll stop talking now, and you guys can just start reading the column.

From Busch:

I am just starting to collect animation on DVD. Anyway, I need some advice on some Region 1 DVD's. In your opinion, is Macross Plus Vol. 1 and 2 good for starters. Do you have to have previous knowledge of the series to understand what is going on? I grew up in the 80's so I have naturally gained a liking to Voltron. Do you ever see them putting multiple episodes onto DVD? Thank You

First, a couple of corrections. In regards to Macross Plus, there are curently two 45-minute episodes on each disc. This series is only 4 eps long, and I don’t know that they would want to put the entire series on one disc. The other thing is that Voltron is a totally separate series from the original Macross. Robotech is the Americanized version of Macross and two other anime series. Basically, it’s three series heavily edited together with a slight attempt to make sense of the whole thing.

Now, about starting with Macross Plus. I think that’s a good choice. I just finished watching it myself, and I really enjoyed it. Other than catching part of a Robotech episode here and there when I was younger, I didn’t really watch the series, and I didn’t have any sort of trouble following the series. The Wanderer, however, was having Robotech flashbacks the entire time, so you might want to be careful of that.

From Zinfondale:

Dear Lady Cat,

I've just read about from the Pioneer site that (in Japan) a new recordable DVD player has just came out. I know it can record don't have to buy new DVD copies of your favorite videos? I believe its still legal because you can have 1 backup copy of your video. And if you do, transfer the videos to DVD will they have they same quality of video?

Also since I'm new in DVD, the only title I bought so far was Gowcaiser. But are there any title that are so bad (I mean in how they play on a DVD player) that you shouldn't even bother getting them? Or at least wait? Thanks.

Well, let me answer the easy part first. As far as I (and Chris) know, there are no discs that are so bad that you should wait for them, or not even bother. Pretty much all the discs that had problems were fixed as soon as the problems were detected. There are a few discs that have what you might consider to be minor problems. For example, the second disc of Macross Plus has some slight audio problems with the dub track. In certain scenes, the background music is louder than the dialogue because there is problem with the center channel if you are watching in 5.1. There are also a couple of discs, such as A-ko that have timing problems with the subs. Now, depending on your own personality, these things might or might not be reasons to avoid certain discs. Macross for example didn’t bother me too much. I just switched to 3.0, and it was fine. Subs are a different thing altogether, though, because it is rather annoying to read someone’s lines while someone else is talking. Like I said, though, it’s all individual, and depends on your preferences and tolerances.

If you’ve had a horrible experience with a DVD that hasn’t had a recall or some other form of fixing, please let me know, and I’ll put it in an upcoming column. I’ve had pretty good luck so far with all my discs, so I’m afraid I can’t contribute any firsthand horrible experience.

Now to the recordable DVD. Couple of things come immediately to mind about this. First, is that the quality of the DVD is only going to be as good as the original tape that you’re duping. If the tape is crap, the DVD will be too. Next, I’d be wondering what region these DVDs would be recording to. I was looking over the press release at http://www.pioneer.co.jp/press/release63.html and, unless I skimmed right over that part of the release, I don’t see any mention of region encoding. I would assume (correct me if you all have heard anything different), that since it’s only available in Japan for right now, it’s either region 2 or region free. I’m leaning towards region 2. That would make the most sense. Also, in regards to your question about recording anime from VHS, the recorder does comply with copyright protection. So if any of those tapes you want to convert are copyright protected, you’ll have to find some sort of mod for the recorder to disable that.

From Airmist:

Ladycat

i need a mod chip for rca divx player #5230z or black box

Well, the only one that I’ve been able to find is on this site:

http://www.fightdivx.com/hackingdivx.htm

The only glitch is that all the mod does is basically wipe out the memory that a particular disc was played, allowing you to watch it as many times as you want. Now, seeing as you can’t get Divx discs anymore, unless you have a whole stash of never-been-watched discs, this mod seems pretty useless. If anyone out there knows of any other mods for Divx players, let me know, and I’ll forward the info on.

From AnimeFan09:

Is there going to be a 3rd OAV series for Tenchi Muyo?

Ah, I’m sure you asked this question for countless numbers of anime fans. J There was at one time a poll on the AIC site, which has since been taken down. They were looking for input from fans as to IF there was another Tenchi production, which continuity would everyone like to see. Apparently, the general consensus was that the OAV continuity was the one everyone wanted. Now that they have everyone’s opinion, there hasn’t really been too much more said about it. At least, I haven’t seen anything posted anywhere, and I’m sure that if there was another Tenchi OAV coming, it would at least be posted somewhere.

In other words, I don’t know.

Well, I hope everyone had a good new year, that no one’s computer exploded, and that no one went out and bought tons of survival gear and now you don’t know what to do with it. Hope you enjoyed the column and I’ll see ya next time! J
