Ask LadyCat

"Give me back my Mosquie, you vampire slut from hell!"

Yes, the first anime quote I've put up. And I had to use it, since I just watched that episode of Master of Mosquiton. I love that show. J Anyway, on to the questions!

From James Upp:

Help! With all the DVDs me and roommates have (ha! sucking them into anime

is fun! :) ) we find ourselves in serious need of a rack to hold all of them. Yet we can't seem to find such a thing anywhere. Every rack we seem to find holds CDs, VHS tapes, or both, but not DVDs. Any recommendations, Onnaneko-sama?

OK, time for a little tour of the strip malls (gotta love 'em). Now, in pretty much every place I've been (Best Buy, Target, and anywhere else), I've never yet seen a storage device specifically for DVDs. And this time was no exception. There were bunches of "multimedia storage devices" (some of which were pretty nice), but nothing just for DVDs. For right now, I would suggest one of these multimedia things (or a plain old bookshelf like I'm using), until the people who make these storage devices figure out that these newfangled DVD things are going to be around, and people need somewhere to put them.

If anyone has seen something specifically for DVDs, let me know. I'm sure pretty much all of us are looking for a place to keep all of our DVDs, before they completely take over. J

From Masami:

Hi, LadyCat!

I'm a Portuguese fellow and Otaku also, so it's normal to visit your site cause it's one of the best of news of anime on the DVD market... My question is if you know if there will be DVD of the "SAINT SEIYA" and "RURONI KENSHIN" series, including the movies... cause I'm a real fan of those anime series...

Glad you like the site! J

Let's do Ruroni Kenshin first. Unless there's been an update, head on over to my site for the answer: http://members.xoom.com/redjaque/shows/shows2.htm.

Now, Saint Seiya on the other hand . . .As of right now, there is not a US release, and, I believe, there's not even a company here that has the rights to the series. The parent company in Japan who owns the rights is Toei Doga. There was a version released in France, but I'm not finding any info on whether it was released on DVD or not. If there is someone who has the rights, let me know. I had a hard time finding much of anything about the show at all. (My thanks to the people in the chatroom who gave me a nudge in the right direction. J )

From Dark Knight:

I was wondering if you know or heard anything about Galaxy Express 999

(I think that's the name, can't remember that well) coming out on dvd?

Yep, that's the title. And, this is a Viz title, so as soon as they get done with Pokémon, I'm sure they'll start in on the rest of their catalog. J Seriously, though, I didn't see mention of a DVD release on their site, but as far as I could see, they're only announcing titles a month or two in advance.

From Jay Henderson:

Hello. I am currently looking for a code free dvd player and I am interested in purchasing the Pioneer 525 codefree DVD player (Modified Malaysian model) that David Black reviewed on this site. Do you know where I can purchase that exact gold player over the web? If you can help me out it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for you time!

Well, not to plug an affiliate or anything . . . . but, you could try DVD City. At this moment, they don't appear to have any in stock, but Chris tells me that their stock is in and out, so you might want to try back at a later time. You could also try codefree.com, although, right now they only have the black model available. I can't say for sure if it'll be back in stock there (as I don't monitor their stock), but I could have sworn that I had seen it there before. The color really makes it stand out. If anyone's seen the player available anywhere else online, let me know, and I'll post it later on.

From Paul Alvarez:

Hey, I read your column regularly and before I get to my question, I just wanted to make a comment. I think its great how much effort you (and those who help you out) put into researching the tons of otaku questions you must receive. Our little hardcore group of fans are lucky to have folks like you. You help spread the cause of anime!

Anyway, enough with the worship :) My question is about VCD's and Multiregion DVDs. I was unaware that even though I can play VCD's in my player, they are encoded in PAL. Man, I was looking forward to watching Star Wars epI and Gundam 0083 on my Projection TV, but now its relegated to my smallish multi-system TV. Is there a good way of converting the signal from PAL to NTSC, relatively inexpensive AND still watchable? By the way, on the laser exchange site (http://www.laserexchange.com/), they are selling a player with that function built in, with MP3 playback and codefree/macrovision free. DAMN! Too late for me!

Whaddaya mean "enough with the worship"? ;-) Just kidding. It is nice to hear that I'm appreciated though. Thanks!

So, on to your question. There actually were a couple of products listed on the Laser Exchange site, but, of course, they were both out of stock. They were also, at the cheapest $200. So I went looking for other places, with similar products. I found this website: http://www.globatronics.com/globatronics/em181chanmts.html If you scroll down towards the bottom, there's something called the Emerson Universal Mulitsystem Video Converter, which'll run ya about $179 (you can find it slightly cheaper here: http://www.1cache.com/1cache/vidsyscon.html). Unfortunately, that's about all I could find, and those were the cheapest prices I came across. Of course there are a bunch of other products available that are more expensive than that. You can check them out on the same sites with the lower priced ones. There's tons of stuff (that's really cheap) for converting NTSC to PAL, but not much going in the other direction, it would seem. (Don't forget, the entertainment world revolves around the US ;-) )

Addendums: Questions so good they came back!

Legends of the Galactic Heroes: Here's an update on where to get fansubs and some other helpful information.

From Jonathon:

Few things...

1)if you want to give a direct link to fansubs, I have them for d/l at ftp://squiredap.student.umd.edu

2)there may be a dvd...according to http://www.ginei.com (and the help of a translator) they've said that they're waiting to do dvd until they can get an international (read: multi-lingual) release out. Thanx bunches

Lodoss War TV: Combating the confusion.

From Jason:

I had the same confusion when I saw an episode at Otakon last year. This review on EX:

http://www.ex.org/4.7/18-anime_lodosstv.html

made things clear to me. Apparently, the books weren't done when they were making the original series, so the story was rewritten. This TV series is supposed to be more accurate to the books.

Transformers . . . finally out? Looks like there is an actual date (which is of course subject to change. But at least there's a year attached to it! ;-) )

From Susumu Kodai:

OK, tentative date from Rhino is 10/10/2000, and it will be 5.1. No confirmation on widescreen (anamorphic or otherwise) or extras, but they are trying to jam pack it.

OK, that's it for this week. More next week, of course, and I'm still trying to get everything updated on my website, so stay tuned! J
