Ask LadyCat

"My mom may dress me funny, but I can be a real Elliot Ness, Pussycat."

So, how's everyone doing this week? Less stressed out than me, I hope. J On to the questions!

From mchang:

To the all-knowing Ladycat,

So, I noticed that series like Cowboy Bebop, Evangelion, and maybe BGC2040, etc. are all coming out on individual DVDs with maybe four or 5 episodes per disc. What are the chances, if any, of these types of things coming out as boxed sets later? Do the companies generally plan on this kind of thing, or are the individual releases the end. I mean, sure the headliner series(es?) deserve the special treatment (Tenchi, FYugi), but you know, what about the rest? Just some curious questions from a guy who likes having special boxed sets of things. Thanks.

Oooh . . . all-knowing. . . . . I like that. ;-)

There seems to be a divided opinion on boxed sets. The prevailing way of looking at it is to either release a boxed set, or individual discs. At least, that seems to be the way the DVDs are going so far. At this point (and into the near future) I don't see a release in a box set of anything that's already been released individually. The main reason being that the companies will probably want to focus on getting out as many different titles as they can, rather than going back and redoing a title that's already out. Plus, they would have to make the box set more "special" than the separate discs, probably by adding some more extras, or more eps per disc, in order to get people to buy it. If the box set is exactly the same as the individual discs, there wouldn't really be a reason for buying the box set. If box sets on VHS are any indication of the way of the box set on DVD, then we've got a few years to go before we have sets of titles that are already out.

From Wuss912:

Memories is an anime movie by Otomo Katsuhiro. He is probably known best as the creator of Akira, one of the most acclaimed anime films of all time. There are three parts to Memories: Magnetic Rose, Stink Bomb, and Cannon Fodder. Memories is one of the best anime movies I've ever seen. I saw the English subtitled edition at Anime Expo '96. Hopefully there will be a US video release sometime in the near future.

know anything about this? it sounds cool. know if

A: it's Licensed?

B: If so Who Has Rights...

C: anything else relevant to the discussion

Thanks

Well, as far as I can tell, no one holds the license to the show in the US. There are a couple of Region 2 reviews on the site (http://www.animeondvd.com/reviews/region2/index.htm), which shows that Bandai is the parent company that owns the rights. There's nary a peep at Anime Village (http://www.animevillage.com) about a release, nor at the newly launched http://www.bandai-ent.com. And all my usual haunts (Anipike, Anime PitStop and all my favorite search engines) also have virtually nothing. If anyone has heard anything about a US release (which I'm pretty skeptical about) let me know. I really think that this is one of those titles that has such a following that virtually everyone would know about a release eons before it was actually released.

From Erik Heineken:

Some info and a question.

After reading Michelle Schott's numerous questions about anime and the upcoming Final Fantasy movie, and the information you had on the latter, I felt obligated to share what little I know, which isn't much considering I can't find the articles about the project in my back issues of PSM and I'm going strictly on what I can remember. So, if any of this is outdated/completely wrong infromation forgive me, k?

First of all, Square started the project soon after the release of Final Fantasy VII on the Sony Playstation and its projected release is Summer 2001. The animation will be completely computer rendered (like the Full Motion Videos in FF7) and it is scheduled to have an English language release first, thereby giving Japan a dubbed/subbed release. Lastly, the plotline is supposed to follow that of Final Fantasy VII.

Hope it helps, Ladycat, and congrats to Michelle on discovering this unappreciated artform. Oh yeah, before I forget, do you know when CPM is planning to release The Slayers on DVD and if the first season will have subtitles?

Well, there is a newsbit about the Slayers release on the newspage. Check under the April 4 news. Other than that, there aren't many hard facts out there. I would have to assume that there will be a sub and a dub on the release. I can't think of a reason why they wouldn't have both. I could maybe see a sub-only release, but not a dub-only. Not for this series, at any rate.

From Mike Miller:

I recently heard a rumor that ADV Films has gotten (or is tring to get) the rights to the Super Robot series Shin Getter. Any truth to that?

Well, I didn't find any real hard facts on this one either. I did find a couple of sites: http://www.umass.edu/rso/umjams/anjul99.html, which has an old update from Anime News Network (it highlights an announcement from AnimeExpo last year), stating that ADV had acquired the rights, and http://www.interlog.com/~tas/anrsoon.html, which has the title listed as owned by ADV. There's no mention of the series that I could find on the ADV site. If anyone has heard a more current rumor/actual fact, lemme know, 'cause this is pretty much all I could find about the series.

From /alex:

Hello!

Great site! I don't know that much about anime or animated movies in general but I am very interested after having seen and loved "the standard" movies like Ghost in the shell, Akira and Ninja Scroll. This might be a boring and common question but I was hoping you could recommend some titles. What I am mainly looking for is gobsmacking animation and beatiful art, but a good story allways goes a long way. I allready preordered Princess Mononoke so what I ask you to do is to compile a list of, say..

three awesome movies you think I schould get, :) I'm not very interested in TV-series.. unless they are unspeakably good looking etc etc :P

Thanx in advance, and keep up the good work!

OK, just so you know that Mononoke has been delayed . . . .Just making sure. J

OK, I'm going to give you my top three, and then a few others that are also really good. Here are my picks: Perfect Blue, serial experiments lain, and either Macross Plus or Tenchi Forever (the third Tenchi movie), which I only suggest if you've seen the show or the OAVs. Perfect Blue, even though I've only seen it dubbed on tape, is an absolutely amazing anime (oooh, alliteration ;-) ). The character designs are great and the whole thing just looks incredible. lain, although a TV series, is not only some of the best animation that I think I've seen but the story is one of those intriguing ones that sucks you in and compel you to watch. Then there's Macross Plus. Great story, great animation. If you've seen Tenchi, I would recommend the third movie. I know that there are quite a few people that didn't like that movie, I would guess for the storyline, and I must admit, the story isn't that different from most of the other Tenchi stories, but the animation is beautiful. As the Wanderer says, "It would be a good movie, if it wasn't a Tenchi movie".

Now, there are a few other titles that I would like to recommend. There are series in here, just to warn you. First off is Cowboy Bebop. The animation in this series is really stylized, and it looks really damn good. The first few eps are really just introduction episodes, where you get to know all the main characters. After that, you start hitting more of the plot points. Iria's another good one, and definitely a must for sci-fi fans. Record of Lodoss War would be next, particularly if you like fantasy series. It's an "older" series, but a good one, nonetheless, even if the story isn't all that original. You might also want to try Venus Wars. The animation isn't the greatest, but it does have some great themes going with the color schemes.

Hope I gave you a few ideas to start with, at least. J

From Omar Aljaff:

Hi, I was wondering if the Escaflowne DVDs will be the Original or the Collectors Edition. The collectors edition is hacked and slashed to fit a less amount of tapes (the original series is 26 eps the collectors edition is some where around 12-16 i am not to sure about the exact number) If you can answer this question it would be very appreciated.

As far as I know, the version that's going to be released is the original version, which is identical to the one that's already out on tape, subbed (and which will be released dubbed day and date with the DVD). There has been a little bit cut from it (from the original Japanese release), but I think it's somewhere around 2 minutes, as I remember it. I could have sworn there was some mention of it on the site, and, of course, I can't find it now. If you've heard that the DVD version is different (read: hacked) than the subbed VHS release let me know . . . . . .so I can go cancel my order. J

Addendums: The questions so good, they came back.

Many, many of you wrote in to let me know about places to find DVD racks. The one place that got the most mentions was http://www.boltz-usa.com/. Thanks to Bill Russell, DragonMaster, and Jonathan Vaughn. Also thanks to Morgan Nightbear for suggesting http://www.sorice.com. Hanzou recommends heading down to Suncoast and checking out their shelving systems. Gabriel Lopez says to check out MediaPlay for their selection. Chris Chappell has several places to check: http://www.laserline.com, http://www.bdiusa.com, and http://www.billybags.com. Douglas Kim says to head over to http://www.cdholdings.com. And Adam Ingram has a couple of places to visit: http://store.yahoo.com/jandr/lse-dvd30nd.html, and http://store.yahoo.com/jandr/cal-dvt14.html. Thanks to everyone who wrote in! J

And Oddly Enough . . . Who'da thunk? ;-)

From Eu Gene:

As a reply to your question on DVD racks, there's lots of them here in Singapore. Strange if USA doesn't have them, since DVDs have better penetration in USA than Singapore due to the popularity of VCDs here(bootleg, pirated or otherwise).

I recently just purchased 2 pieces of a 100 DVD rack just to store my growing DVD collection. Their prices do range from a measly US$10 for a 20 piece rack to about US$100 for those wood-panelled ones. Yumm. They're available in most video shops.

More on Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Now, I hadn't heard anything more about this title, since the question was posed, but if anyone has heard of anything, drop me a line.

From Marcon:

Just saw a question on Legend of the Galactic Heroes and I had a quick follow up question.... one of the fan sub sites i was getting my tapes from said that they got a nice letter from a company who did not wish to be named asking them to stop distributing that series because they were negotiating for the rights to it and were considering distributing it in the US. Dont know if they meant on dvd or not, but i was hoping to see it in the states... too bad this was over a year ago. I down load my eps from an online site bank now, but i was wondering, was there any truth to the rumor? I got the fan subs from the same place that did Child's Toy. I cant remember the exact name, but im looking now.

'K guys 'n' girls, that wraps it up for this week. Stay tuned for more questions next week. Catch ya then!
